Elaine Robbins eliminated about 30 competitors in the finals, finally spelling the word "cadaverous" to win a $1,000 scholarship from the Walgreen Company in the MS Word En counters competition. "It wasn't the hardest word to win on," said Miss Robbins modestly. "It was just an in credible streak of luck. Every word I got I knew how to spell." Miss Robbins, a member of the National Honor Society and the high school debate team, plans to use her $1,000 scholarship to further her education in the field of chemistry. She is the daughter of Edward and Dian Robbins of MeHenry. Schermerhorn will be placed on the ballot for the one existing vacancy of associate judge in the 19th Judicial Circuit, according to Chief Judge Jack Hoogasian. The annual contest was held last month at Elmhurst College. Finalists from 28 Chicago and suburban high schools par ticipated in the program, which benefits "multiple sclerosis research and -services to patients. Finalists were qualified through a written spelling test given to all participants at their schools as well as through competition at semi-finals held eary last December. The MS Word Encounters is offered each fall by the Chicago- Northern Illinois Chapter, National Multiple Sclerosis Society. For more information, call the MS office at 312-922-8000. Girl Scouts of all ages will be taking orders for their annual cookie sale from Feb. 1 through 15_Money from the sale goes to Support troop activities, cam ping facilites and other council sponsored girl programs. Seven flavors of cookies are available, and orders will be delivered starting March 16. Part of the Girl Scout Com puter Fun badge encourages girls to learn how information comes out. Girl Scouts in the Sybaquay Girl Scout Council will get hands on, practical application of this as they use computerized summary sheets for Girl Scout cookies for the first time in 1984. The girls will complete the traditonal order blank with their customers and then return to a troop meeting to complete a computer scanning report form that looks much like the com puterized test forms that children use in school. The scan V sheets will provide the in formation to the council and cookie companies to fill the order. Two well known com panies selected the Sybaquay Council to pilot this computer program that will help track sales, calculate cookie earnings and Cookie Dough camp credits in a more efficient manner. CALL -815.728-0424 Seventy-eight Illinois finan cial institutions and their branches will be taking ap plications for low-interest home loans under a $130 millioin state- backed program designed to provide first-time home buyers with affordable home loans, according to state Rep. Dick Klemm (R-Crystal Lake). Under the program, interest will be figured at a percentage rate of 10.7 on 30-year mor tgages. The present market interest rate is about 13.25 to 13.50 percent. Participating banks will be taking applications until Jan.31, at which time they will hold a lottery to determine who will receive the loans. Officials expect that about 2400 families will be served by the program. The following criteria must be met to qualify for a loan: ...The purchaser must not have owned a home for the past three years. . ...The annual hosehold income must not exceed $50,200. ...The purchase price can not exceed the specific amounts for given areas.1 ...A minimum 5 percent down payment is required. ...A ."service charge" of 1 percent must be paid. "These low-interest home loans will enable many people who couldn't otherwise afford it, to buy a home," Klemm said. "Many families have been discouraged by high interest rates, and this program will help fulfill their dreams of owning a home."
