Despite the close loss Skyhawk coach Ben Beck couldn't fault his team's effort. "The guys played a super first half. The Bears took us out of position. We had contained their big guy (six-foot-11 center Roman Miller) in the first half, but in the third quarter we didn't honor him. We tried to take the ball at him and that's where we got hurt. "But the guys did what we had practiced and worked on throughout the week and I can't ask much more than that," said Beck. Bill Fitzgerald 01 Shamrock Realty Says!!!! AND MADE IT COMFORTABLE Johnsburg grapplers zap Lake Zurich LAKE ZURICH - Forgive Mike Roberts if be seems to talk about his Johnsburg Skyhawk wrestling team boldly these He has good reason His Skyhawks won their third Northwest Suburban Conference match this season, defeating Lake Zurich 44-14. That's pretty good for a team which had no NWSC wins ever coming into the 1983-84 season. "You can quote me on this," said a very happy Roberts. "As a team, we never wrestled better ever in the four years of (Johnsburg wrestling." Jphnsburg's last match of the season will be against Grayslake this Friday, a win will give Johnsburg a winning reconl in the NWSC. that would satisfy* Roberts even further. "Our goal before the season started was to finish at .500. To be over .500 would be very satisfying because we're so young," Johnsburg's overall record stands at 7-6-1. The Skyhawks recorded four falls on route to the win. Dave Shedbalkar atlfc-pounds pinned Randy Pavltfvich in 3:28 for the first one. Another pin was recorded by Jim Walker at 126- pounds against Scott Nagy in 1:26. The match ended with Emil Marunde pinning Thomas in 45 seconds at 185-pounds and Jim Bentz pinning Bruce Mutrea at heavyweight in 1:80. Mike Cahill shutout his op ponent at 138-pounds, 13-0 over Rich Van Horn. Other wins were recorded by Brian Hauck (145) over Stu Pohlman U-ff, Mark Dumelle (155) over Bruce Boorom 5-3 and Bently Treat (167) over John Calandra\}2-9. The Sophomore squad also won, 38-12. V r* Lady Warriors lose to Cary, Blue Streaks Pat Wirtz feels his McHenry Warrior girls' basketball team has found its defense, but is still struggling with its offense. The Lady Warriors > continued to struggle offensively this weekend, losing to Cary-Grove 32-30 and Woodstock 43-26. The losses dropped McHenry's record in the Fox Valley Conference at 0-4. The overall record stands at 3-10. "I felt our defense did very well in both games. It's still our shooting which is getting us in trouble," Wirtz said. "We run our offenses well. We take the good shots. Execept for a few contests such as Dundee-Crown and Waucona ., our turnover* equaled the opposition. "Against Cary in the second half, we did not penetrate their half court trap very well. Although are shot charts show Cary took only five more shots. They simply put the ball through more times than we did." Sarah Prust's nine points led McHenry scoring. Andee Norton and Greta Larsen scored eight each. The Warriors were without the services of Renee Mezzano, the teams leading scorer, for both games due to an injury. McHenry jumped out to a 8-4 first quarter lead. The Trojans closed the gap by *?ne by out- scoring McHenry 14-11 in the second quarter. Cary took command in the third quarter and wait into the final quarter with a 28-23 lead. The Lady Warriors battled back in the final quarter, but Cary hung on for the two-point win. Mezzano's absence hurt more against Woodstock. Woodstock streaked past McHenry 10-6 after one quarter and went into halftime with a 20-16 lead. Woodstock blew open the game in the second half, outselling McHenry 23-10. "Halfway through the third period we were down 22-18 and missed five straight op- portunites to pull within two points. That was the story. Hie ball would not fall," said Wirtz. "We really slowed the tempo down playing without Renee Mezzanp and Patty Johnson our main handlers. Kim Busche, replacing Mezzano, scored 11 points in her first varsity start. Lake's Cablevision wins first game ever TIGHT DEFENSE -- by Warrior guard Tim Schmitt (right) finds Todd Suma of Jacobs looking for help as the second quarter is just seven seconds from ending. FREE THROW LEAVES ---------------- continued from page 16 Lake Zurich' Miller has been intimidating to several teams. However, according to Nesheim the Bears cannot solely rely on Miller. "This is only Roman's second year in basketball and he does start for us. But we have been bringing him along and working on his abilities. There has been improvement and he gets better each game. However, we look to R a b e o r , o u r c o - c a p t a i n , f o r court leadership. When Rabeor plays well, the whole team plays with him. Preston led all scorers with 15 points and claimed 11 rebounds. Joe Majercik and Jeff Jayko each had eight points. L a k e ' s C a b l e v i s i o n , McHenry's Men's Park and Recreation Basketball doormat for the past two seasons, took a giant leap towards climbing from those depths. Cablevision did so by defeating a surprised Little John's 33-21 to notch its first victory ever in 20 games. Vic Santi, captain and leading scorer in the contest with 13 points, summed it up well when he said, "It's just like being in high school again." Lake Cablevision supporters were prohibited from cutting down the nets, but it did not queU the victory exaltation. Lake's jumped out to a 20-6 halftime lead as Little John's time and again could not sink the open shot. Bob DeRose and Herb Ferguson picked up the winners with 15 points. Bob Fowler led Little John's with nine points. Both teams are 1-6 on the year. SFI_61 H-M 50 State Farm Insurance threw a monkey wrench into Henehan and Mclntyre title hopes, as four players notched double figures in a 61-50 victory. State Farm's victory leaves them only one game behind Henehan with a 4-3 record, good for third place. Second place Henehan and Mclntyre's record drops to 5-2. John Systma and * Mike Burgdorf led a second half surge in which the winners overcame 29-21 halftime deficit to outscore Henehan's 40-21. Systma scored 14 of his game high 20 points, while Burgdorf hit 12 of his 14 total points in the half. Greg Davis hit for 14 total points, plus Ron Glawe's 11 points, gave State Farm a balance attack. Henehan's was led by Scott Naperman's 14 points, Barry Nichols' 13 and Rich Madsen's 10. CMW 66 SF 52 Christopher1: Men's Wear outlasted Sullivan Foods in a contest which was much closer than the final 66-52 outcome. Sullivan trailed by only six points with 5:20 left. Full court pressure strategy backfired and Christopher's scored a number of easy buckets. Dan Stanowski led all scorers with 22 points, including 15 first half points to help Christopher's to a 33-21 lead at intermission. Don Harris scored 16 and Gary Snell returned to the lineup after a facial injury to notch 15 im portant points coming off the bench. Mike Rablehofer scored 18 points to lead Sullivan. Once again the potent shooting guard was torrid from the charity stripe hitting 14-of-16 attempts. Mark Adomaitus chipped in 14 points. Christopher's Men's Wear increases its league leading record to 7-0, a full two games ahead of its second place competitor. Sullivan falls to 3-4. Tonight Little John's takes on Sullivan Foods at 6:45 p.m., Lakes Cablevision and Henehan and Mclntyre at 7:45 p.m., while Christopher's Men's Wear to play State Farm Insurance at 8:45 p.m. McHENRY WINS BATTLE continued from page 16 effect that had on his squad. "Offensively, he isn't that much of a difference. Defensively he helps us out and just being on the floor," Ludwig wished Harris was in the game. Ludwig wasn't aware Harris was out for the game and had his team practice all week as if the 6-foot-6 center was in the lineup. With both teams not playing up to par offensively, the dif ference might have been McHenry's fast start in the first quarter. Jump shots over the Jacob zone defense by Corey Scott, Freund and Dunne gave McHenry an early 6-2 lead. Joe Lipinsky's jump shot narrowed the lead to 6-4, but the Warriors reeled off nine straight points for a 15-4 lead. Peterson's tip-in closed out the Warrior scoring in the quarter, w h i l e P a u l A d a m s h i t f o r Jacobs. Slimko's basket closed the gap 4$15-8, but Freund and Scott raised the McHenry lead back up at 19-8. Again, Jacobs put on a spurt and Slimko's stuff made it 19-14. The first half ended with McHenry holding a 21-16 ad vantage. The third quarter was little unusual. A total of six points were scored between the two teams. Slimko's turnaround jump shot early in the quarter was the Golden Eagles only scoring. Fruend hit on a jump shot for McHenry. The Warriors called timeout shortly after with 4:32 left. With 3:25 left in the quarter, Craig Hill hit on a jump shot to complete the scoring for McHenry. The Warriors held a 25-18 lead going into the final quarter. Both teams stepped up the scoring in the fourth quarter. Dunne and Freund hit on jump shots to raise McHenry's lead to its largest, 29-18. Baskets by Adams and Slimko again cut the Warrior lead, but McHenry would not be denied this game. Peterson's basket with just over three minutes left gave McHenry a 10 point lead. John NarduUi's free throw attempt with 28 seconds in the game was Jacobs first free attempt from the stripe in the game. He made one of two. McHenry made six-out-of-ninei The Warriors were able to hold onto that 10 point lead the rest of the way. William Sch mitt's tip-in finished the scoring for McHenry.
