Keeping Healthy: Skidding major peril of winter None of the perils of winter driving is more feared by motorists than skidding out of control on ice and snow. Accelerating too fast on slippery surfaces, driving at excessive speeds and sudden turning and braking can cause your tires to lose traction and throw your vehicle into a skid. Rear wheel drive vehicles tend to swirig or "fishtail," when you accelerate quickly or go around a corner too fast. Front wheel drive cars rarely fishtail, says one leading motor club. Rapid acceleration causes the wheels to spin and the front of the car to veer off course. Skidding when attempting to round a corner may cause the car to go in a straight line. (Jetting out of a skid is basically the same for both types of cars. When you start to skid, try to generate as much traction as possible to taking your foot off the accelerator and off the brakes. Hold the steering wheel fir mly, but don't make any quick turns. Gently steer in the direction you want the front of the car to go. If you want thenar to go right, steer right. If you want the car to go left, steer left. Unless the skid is too severe, following these instructions should get you back on course. and will be taught by members of the McHenry County Estate Planning Council. Something special is hap pening at Memorial Hospital for McHenry County: It's cMled "Family centered Maternity Care" and involves the entire family in the birthing perience. Facility remodeling and the addition of the birthing room - has enabled the Memorial Hospital staff to help the family unit learn and grow together with the birth of a baby. "Family centered maternity care encourages the nursing and medical professions to prepare the family physically, emotionally, and intellectually for pregnancy, delivery and parenting," explained Linda Kielas, director of Nursing at the hospital. Two programs that have proved extremely popular - pre natal classes and sibling open house --• assist Memorial Hospital staff members in preparing families -for the birthing experience. For many years, the obstetrical-nursery departments have presented a three-evening series of pre-natal classes. Since early 1982, the nursery and obstetrical departments have combined efforts to offer a Sibling Open House every few months to enable siblings to prepare for a new arrival in the family. The sibling-grandparent visitation after delivery as part of the overall family centered- maternity care philosophy contributes to the improved total family relationship. In addition to the traditional delivery services, Memorial Hospital has developed a bir thing room program whereby a homelike atmosphere for the birthing experience, including the father, is available. After appropriate preparation, fathers are also encouraged to participate in Caesarean section births as well. HEARINS AID SALES & REPAIRS ALL MAKES I FREE LOANERS!
