All roads lead to roam The festive p By HELEN KLEIN Mardi Gras may occur only once a year, but New Orleans is a city which al ways radiates holiday ex citement. ' u / not complete without at least one visit to the French Market for a breakfast of beignets (fritters bathed in powdery confectioner's sugar) accompanied by one or more cups of the city's characteristically heady, chicory-flavored coffee. After breakfast, browse among the shops and stalls, and be sure to see the fa mous streetcar, Desire, at her place at the far end of the market. Any sightseeing of New Carre (French Quarter),.the ^Orleans should beg in at ambiance is one of gaiety, Jackson Square, dominated celebration, devil-may- by the towering shape of St. care revelry. More than anywhere elsp I have ever been, 1 feel good when 1 stroll through the streets of the Vieux Carre, whether in the smouldering warmth of a July afternoon or the crisp coolness of a sunny February morning. For, New Orleans is a city which invites visitors to participate in its festivities, festivities which it takes very seriously indeed. And, indeed, anything in this city is a festivity: from an afternoon excursion on the bayous to a simple meal in the quiet courtyard of a restaurant. Preservation Hall, the home of jazz, stands just off Bourbon Street beckon ing passersby to enter and indulge. Nearby, Pat O'Brien's, a dark, cavernous place, of fers New Orleans' specialty drink, the Hurricane, in tall glasses that pack an unex pected punch. The elegant G a 11 i e r House, dream home of a 19th century architect, is open for tours which con clude on the peaceful iron work balcony overlooking Royal Street, where cook ies and coffee are served. Visitors are invited to lin ger and enjoy the food, the view and the atmosphere. A Visit to New Orleans is Louis Cathedral, a silhou ette reminiscent of fairy tale castles. Jackson Square also boasts several other noted New Orleans monuments -- The Cabildo, the struc ture which housed the gov- ernment during New Orleans' stretch as a Span ish Colony; the Presbytere, now a branch of the Louisi- ana State Museum, but built around the turn of the 19th century to serve as a residence for parish clergy; and the Fontalba Buildings, constructed in the mid- 19th century as prototypical apartment buildings, fronted by gracefully fret ted wrought iron. From Jackson Square, the best plan is to walk, and to continue walking, taking streets as fancy leads, in and out of alleys, and past the myriad of charmingly characteristic buildings, with front porticos, which today are showcases for shops and restaurants, or are private homes, or subdi vided into apartments. When you can tear your self away from the French Quarter, take a ride into the fabled Garden District, with its spacious homes -- truly a feast for the eyes. Other musts -- a walk along the ramparts over looking the Mississippi FADING INTO THE MIST, New Orleans' St. Louis Cathe- dral dominates Jackson Square with its towering, fairytale castle towers. River, less a scenic wonder than an opportunity to mar vel at the commerce the river carries from this, its coastal port: a lunch of a Po' Boy or a Muffelata Sandwich, on crusty conti nental bread, in one of the cafes lining Jackson Square; a visit to the eerie, above-ground burying places, with the tombs on stilts (to counter flooding problems which are com mon in the Mississippi Delta); dinner at one of New Orleans' famous Cre ole restaurants, such as Brennan's, Broussard's or Galatoire's. Things to take home as memories of the city -- boxes of pralines, the sticky, extra-sweet pecan candy that is New Orleans' specialty; one of the cook books featuring traditional Creole recipes, either as they are featured in the city's popular restaurants, or culled from the long-time inhabitants for the Junior League cookbook; Mardi Gras favors, either caught during one of the parades (if you're lucky enough to visit New Orleans at that most festive time) or pur chased inexpensively from a myriad of stores.
