STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD MOSQUITO REPORT In June of 1983, the McHenry City Council once again concerned itself with mosquitoes, and what measures should be taken against them. Michael Tryon, of Clark Outdoor Spraying, reported to the council that the company was shifting the em phasis of mosquito abatement from the adult mosquito to the larva. New techniques in lafvicjjding include the use of Bacillus Thuringiensis (BT), a bacterium well known to McHenry residents because of the Gypsy moth controversy in 1981. New developments have occurred in the use of BT, including delayed release of the bacteria. Another' method includes the use of synthetic materials - insecticides. In some areas, minnows which feed on a phenomenal number of larva, are brought in and stocked in ponds and standing water. Tryon said the adulticiding program (fogging) would be used as necessary. Fogging is the most con troversial of the techniques and involves the use of the chemical , Malathion. Tryon said the toxicity of the chemical is low and that from an economic and safety standpoint, Malathion is the standard of the industry. Tryon admitted that, at best, fogging is a tem porary measure and that larviciding would be the focus of the 1983 program.
