Skyhawks ended the regular season with a 59-54 loss to Lake Zurich. Coach Ben Beck's record stood at 8-15 overall and 3-11 in the Northwest Suburban Conference. The month ended with Johnsburg hosting a regional. The Skyhawks opened up with a 91-42 win over Alden-Hebron. Brian Siudak scored 17 for Johnsburg, while Tom Meehan scored 16. The Marian Hurricanes ended the season winning two of four games. The Hurricanes lost to Harvard 80-60, but came back with a win over St. Edward 70- 57. Another loss followed, this time to Woodstock, 77-74, but again Marian came back with a win, 95-86 over St. Francis. Area lady eager squads had their share of frustrations as well. The Lady Warriors only managed one victory in six games. Losses came to Crystal Lake Central (51-32), Crystal Lake South (59-43), Jacobs (38- 33), Cary-Grove (46-42) and Woodstock (49-42). The lone win was over Crown 39-38. The Johnsburg Lady squad lost to Lake Zurich (58-24), Grayslake (61-59), Antioch (68- 41), Warren (50-43) and Round Lake (44-35); before breaking a 11 game NWSC losing streak. The Skyhawks defeated Grant 47-39. Theresa Hauck and Kathy Butler led Johnsburg with 16 points each. The Skyhawks ended the month with a 54-45 loss to Lake Zurich. The month of February was the ending of the wrestling season. It was a long and disappointing season for McHenry. The Warriors lost the last match of the season 33-30 to Crystal Lake Central. The Warriors then finished sixth in the Fox Valley championship meet. John Clewis took a third and Tom Wrona was fourth. McHenry came back the next weekend, and against the same FVC teams, finished fourth at the regionals. Ric Conner, Mike Love, John Clewis, Russ Bunday and Tom Wrona qualified for sectionals. All four were eliminated at sectionals. The Johnsburg squad had a little better results with qualifyers. The team lost the last meet of the season, 61-5 to Grayslake to finish with a 0-7 NWSC record and 5-13-1 overall. At the conference meet, the Skyhawks finished last, with Mike Hurckes finishing fourth at 132 pounds. The Skyhawks finished seventh in the Harvard regional with two wrestlers qualifying for sectionals - Mike Hurckes and Guy Bazilwich. After winning the WSSC title, Marian took a fifth, qualifying Mark Wohnrade, Kevin Niedospial, John Nebel and Rich Kelly. Harvard won the title for the 10th straight time. Hurckes went on to place second at sectional to qualify for the state meet. That was the first time a Skyhawk qualified for a state meet. The Warriors finished with a 4-4 record. The season ended when the Warriors finished ninth in the sectionals. ^ Henry Mather of Marian broke a sectional record in the 100-yard breaststroke. Besides the regular prep results, two other events broke sporting news in the McHenry area. Johnsburg High School dedicated its Wall of Fame during halftime in its game with Grayslake. The Wall of Fame honored past top athletes. After weeks of postponments, the Rescue 50 snowmobile marathon got under way Sun­ day, Feb. 13. Very little snow was on the ground and it was poor conditions for snowmoviling. But 37 snowmobilers participated. MARCH March is always the month were the basketball season dwindles down to the end and the awards are handed out. A estimated crowd of 1,700 fans jammed Buckner Gyift for the Warriors final Fox Valley Conference game against Jacobs. It was the seeond largest crowd in the Gym's history. It was no secret that Jacobs' Tom Schafer was one of the main reasons for the large crowd. Among the crowd was a number of college scouts from all over. Illinois coach Lou Henson was one of the many in attendance. Schafer dicln't disappoint the crowd, as he scored 34 points to lead Jacobs to a 67-56 win. McHenry finished with a 7-7 record, while Jacobs tied Crystal Lake South for the FVC title with a 13-1 record. Schafer ended up picking Illinois as his college. The coaches chose the all- conference team for the Fox Valley the following Monday. Bill Herrmann was the only McHenry player to be named. The Warrior season ended the following weekend with a <*8-63 loss to Crystal Lake Central in the regionals. Herrmann scored 20 points for the losers. Herrmann and Mike Bauml were later chosen by Shaw Meuia sports writers -as all county players. Others on that list included Karen Karpavicius and Tern Blume of the Lady Warriors. Theresa Hauck and Jeff Fowler were named from Johnsburg. The Johnsburg basketball team's season ended with a 45-40 loss to Harvard. The Skyhawk record stood at 9-16. Fowler made all-conference honors. Hie McHenry girls' basketball team ended its season with a 43- 42 upset win over Crystal Lake Central, but lost to Crystal Lake South 69-46 in the regionals. The Warriros ended the season with a 6-15 record. The Johnsburg girls' basketball team lost to Rich­ mond, 44-43, and ended Nortwest Suburban play with a 41-40 loss to Grayslake. The Skyhawks season ended with a 35-27 loss to North Boone in the regionals. The squad's record stood at 5-16. Mike Hurckes, of the John­ sburg wrestling squad, ended his Skyhawk wrestling career, losing in the second round of the state meet. He lost 10-8 to Greg Poland of Mt. Carmel in the 132- pound class. His season record stood at 30-9-1. Another state qualifyer was little more successful. Henry Mather of Marian took second place in the 100-yard breast- stroke at the state meet in a time of 1:00.60. Three spring sport teams opened their season in late March. The McHenry water polo team opened with a second place in the Chicago Latin Tourney. The Water Warriors lost 10-9 to Highland Parte in the cham­ pionship match. A week later, McHenry hosted Highland Park and won 14-7. The McHenry track team opened the season with a second place in the Crystal Lake Central Relays. Central won the title with 111 points, with McHenry scoring 46. The McHenry badminton team lost to DeKalb in its opener. APRIL April is the official starting month of spring sports. Rainy weather forced many can­ cellations, but the season did get underway. The McHenry Warrior baseball team opened up the month with a 6-3 win over An­ tioch, but was stymied by Lake Zurich's Don Berrelez, who threw a two hitter. The Bears won 7-1. McHenry suffered another loss to Jacobs 11-1, but a week later, McHenry came back edged the same Eagles 9-7. The Warriors ended the month with losses to Johnsburg (5-2) and Woodstock (9-4). The win over McHenry was one of four wins on the month for Johnsburg. In a 3^0 win over Richmond, Skyhawk pitcher Mike Hurckes flurted with a no- hitter for five innings, when Dave Brantley finally singled for the Rockets. Johnsburg defeated Marian (11-2) and Grayslake (3-2). Although nobody knew at the s start, McHenry would became a force in the Fox Valley Conference, only to lose the title by a single game. Hie Lady Warriors opened up with a 7-1 win over Johnsburg and defeated Crystal Lake Central 15-5 in the FVC opener. The win streak would extend to six games with wins over Marian (13-7), Antioch (16-6) and Crown (10-0). The Warriors Cissy Pink staff became one of the top pitchers in the area. She was credited with the shutout against Crown. The McHenry Water Polo team was making its move for a berth to the state meet. The Warriors defeated LaGRangfe (18-14), Hoffman Estates (27- 12), Riverside-Brookfield (11-8), Palatine (7-2) and Glenbrook (8- 7). McHenry carried a 8-3 record out of the month. The McHenry tennis team opened with a 3-2 loss to Antioch, but defeated Grant 5-0. The Warriors captured the McHenry quadrangular, edging John­ sburg 20-18, with Schaumburg scoring 1 13. The highlight match was the number one singles match featuring Dan Kiernan of Johnsburg and Scott Rhode of McHenry. Kiernana won. McHenry then followed with a loss over Dundee (3-2), but defeated Round Lake (4-1). The Warriors opened FVC play with a 5-0 loss to tennis power, Crystal Lake South. The- Johnsburg tennis team lost to Jacobs 3-2, but defeated Grayslake 4-1. The McHenry boys' track team opened up the outdoor season with a 78-67 win over Round Lake. McHenry garnered 10 first places. The Running Warriors were fourth in the Viking-Panther Relays. Brian Wright captured a first in the 800 meter run and second in the 1600 meter run. In a triangular with the Crvstal Lake Schools, McHenry closed the gap against central, 85-56, a and overtook South 33. The Warriors beat two, Crown and Jacobs, in another triangular. The McHenry girls' track squad lost to Crystal Lake South and Central in the triangular and took fifth in the McHenry County meet. Johnsburg was seventh. Delia Saunders won the ,1600 meter run title. The Lady Warriors took a second in a triangular at Woodstock. The Johnsburg girls' track team lost twice in a double dual with Wauconda and Grayslake. The McHenry badminton team d defeated Elgin Larkin and North Chicago, but lost to Zion-Benton. The prestigious Boston Marathon took on a local flavor as three area runners finished the race; Jim Wheels, Bobbie Hall and Linda Usrey. In another big development, the newly formed Red Devils minor league football team named Marian High School coach Don Penza as coach. MAY Several area athletes ex­ tended their seasons one more month by qualifying for state competition. However, most athletes and their teams com­ petition ended with the month, The McHenry tennis doubles team of Scott Rhode and Kevin Burgess were one of the for­ tunate few after qualifying in the sectional meet. Johnsburg's Dan Kiernan at number one singles, competing in the same Johnsburg's Missy Christie joined Bev Hiller as the Skyhawks first state track qualyfiers.
