The Tigers first season in the Northern Illinois Baseball League was more than successful by winning the league title. sectional, qualified, along with Paul Hendrixson at number two singles. The McHenry tennis team ended the season losing to Cary- Grove 4-1 and taking a second in the Fox Valley meet. Todd Rhode took the number three singles title. Johnsburg's tennis team took a third in theNor- thwest Suburban Conference, while Kiernan took the number one singles title. Johnsburg's Jay Jackson became only the second track athlete in the school's history to qualify for state. He took a second in the 3.200 meter run in Lisle sectionals. His time also broke a school record. John sburg took 11th place as a team. The Johnsburg girls' track team sent two girls to the state meet after sectional action at Lisle. Missy Christi qualified in the mile and half-mile, while Bev Hiller qualfied in the long jump. McHenry's Donna Hoch ad vanced to the badminton state meet by placing third in the district meet at Waukegan East. At the state meet, she was eliminated in the third round. The McHenry Water Polo team was the only area team to paticipate in a state meet. The Water Warriors lost to St. Viator 11-10 and finished with a 11-6 record. Two other area teams kept their post-season hope alive. The Johnsburg baseball team, after winning its last three games, open up with a 13-3 win over Marian in the regionals. The Skyhawks took the regional title with a 5-4 victory over Stillman Valley. Johnsburg tied the game in the sixth inning and won after Joe Majercik doubled and was knocked in on Jim Bentz's single. After losing the FVC title, the McHenry softball team opened up regional play with a 14-0 win over Johnsburg. The Lady Warriors opened up the month with a 6-5 loss to Crystal Lake South, losing in the eighth inning on a two-out drive to center by Colleen Henry. The Warriors then lost to Grayslake 24-17, after giving up 14 runs in the final inning. The Warriors carrre back with 3-0 win over South to share the FVC lead with the Gators. McHenry also defeated Jacobs 7-1, but lost the FVC title with a 5-3 loss to Cary- Grove. The McHenry baseball team ended its season with a 12-3 defeat to Rockford-Boylan in the regionals. Earlier, the Warriors lost to Dundee (12-2, 3-1) and Crown (4-1), before defeating Crown (1-0) and Cary-Grove (4- 0). Mike Bauml and Tim Evans pitched the shutouts. McHenry then lost twice to Crystal Lake South twice (6-1,9- 2) and Central (11-6), before defeating Central in the FVC final (4-0). Bauml's shutout against Central lowered his ERA to 1.28. McHenry finished with a 8-11 overall record and 6-8 in the FVC. The McHenry track teams season ended with little success. After f finishing eighth in the McHenry relays, the boys' team took a second in the FVC meet. Mladen Rudman placed in four events, while the Warrior 800 meter relay team.took a flfst. At the Rockford sectionals, McHenry only scored 8^ points and took a fifth at the McHenry County meet. Steve Carby took the coun!3£)3,200 meter run title, along with the 800 meter run. Off the playing field, a coaching controversy developed over at Johnsburg. The John sburg school board decided let- go w wrestling coach Don March. Several parents ex pressed concern for the move. In another development, the Johnsburg Tigers announced its opener would be against St. Charles. The Northern Illinois Baseball League consisted of Algonquin, Crystal Lake and Marengo. JUNE Several sporting events highlighted the month of June. One of the bigger events was a golf exhibition held at the McHenry Country Club spon sored by Taylor Made and McHenry Hospitipal. A crowd between 150 and 200 people watched a golf clinic put on by Bobby Clampett and Gary Halberg. After the clinic, the crowd expanded to 275-300 to watch Clampett and Halberg play with Harry Taylor and Jim Buenzli i in a exhibition match. Buenzli is a former McHenry Warrior who played for the University of Illinois. Taylor played one season on the professional tour, before joining the Taylor Made company. Clampett won the match with 68, while Taylor turned in a 69 The newly formed Johnsburg Tigers got into heavy baseball action in June. The Tigers jumped off to a 4-1 start, split ting a doubleheader with Algonquin, defeating St. Charles on a three hitter by Dave Covalt and sweeping Marengo. June was also the inaugural of the McHenry County Red Devil Football team. The semi-pro team lost its opener to the Rock- ford Ramsi33K). Johnsburg High School named the new wrestline coach for the varsity squad. Last season's assistant coach Mike Roberts was given the job by the Johnsburg school board. Jim Briscoe, a teacher at the school, was named his assistant. The McHenry softball team's state dreams were darkened by nemisis Crystal Lake South. McHenry had defeated Wauconda in the regional semi finals, but lost to South in the finals, 3-2. The Lady Warriors committed two costly errors to offset Cissy Pinkstaff's four hitter. Pinkstaff joined teammates Karen Karpavicius, Andee Norton and Greta Larsen on the Fox Valley all-conference team. Mike Bauml and Tim Evans made FVC honors for the McHenry baseball team. The Johnsburg baseball team lost in the first round of the Elmhurst sectional to Im maculate Conception 2-1. Jeff Jayko pitched a no-hitter for five innings, but the Skyhawks committed six errors. The McHenry tennis doubles team of Kevin Burgess and Scott Rhode ended the season with a 2- 2 record in the IHSA state meet. With the school baseball season ending, the McHenry American Legion baseball team got its season going defeating Crystal Lake 3-1 on Mike Bauml's five-hitter. McHenry defeated Wonder Lake 9-1, but lost to Algonquin 6-5 on a two- run sixth inning. McHenry clinched second place in McHenry County with a 5-2 win over Wonder Lake. McHenry ended July play with a 9-4 league record, and 11-9 overall. Wonder Lake fell to 3-8. The McHenry Red Devil picked up thier first win of the season with a 21-20 win over Peoria. Jeff White, newly required quarterback, led the Red Devils. The Red Devils, however, would not win another game the rest of the season. They finished the month with a 26-17 loss to Rockford and a 33-13 loss to Gary. Don Deegan of Gary set a league record with a 98- touchdown strike. He threw for 367 yards and passed for four touchdowns. In other developments, a local golf professional and a Wonder Lake native made big news. Jim Sobb, the club professional at Chapel Hill Country Club, held the lead in the Illinois Open until the final hole of the final round. A bogey dropped him out of the lead and left four other tied for the lead. A playoff gave the title to Bill Hoffer. Mark Pittman, a Wonder Lake native, was named a part-time assistant to Univeristy of Cin cinnati basketball coach Tony Yates. Fiesta Days was the highlight of July in McHenry and along with that celebration is the seven-mile River Run. Dave Valentine, a Chicago resident, won the event in 34:10.3. His time broke last year's time set by Jim Mclnerney, but the course was shortin a bit. McHenry's Jim Wheeler was Valentine's nearest competitor in 35:39.0. Gayle Peterson of Crystal Lake was the first lady/finisher, in a time of 44:42.4. It was her second straight River Run title in the women's, division. Last year'she finished the route in 46.00. Another McHenry favorite in July is the McHenry Area 12- inch All-Star game. This year, the East swept the West 8-0 and 12-7. The Johnsburg Tigers kept on with their winning ways by winning three of five games. Johnsburg opened up the month by defeating Crystal Lake 8-5, but losing the second game by forfeit. A brawl after a close play at the plate and in terference by a fan resulted in the umpire handing the game to Crystal Lake. Tiger manager protested and a ruling on the game was made later in the season. The Tigers split another doubleheader, this time with Algonquin, winning 8-2, but losing 6-3. Homeruns by Brian Wilson, Gary Schnulle and Tim Frantz powered Johnsburg into a 17-4 win over Marengo. Baseball action continued on the American Legion diamonds. McHenry started the month on a sour note, losing to Crystal Lake 11-0. But McHenry came back and defeated previous un defeated Algonquin, 6-5. The game, however, was protested by Algonquin. The action hit a pinnacle when Art Jackson captured his 12th McHenry Country Club title over old friends Ed Buss and Vale Adams. R was almost a unbelieveable feat because Jackson had suf fered a heart attack in May. "I'm little tired." said Jackson. "This has *to be my most satisfying win next to may first one."
