Under the Child Passenger Protection Law, all parents or legal guardians residing in Illinois who transport their children under six years of age unrestrained in a motor vehicle will be subject to arrest and fine, according to the Illinois State Police. The law was passed last summer by the General Assembly, but law enforcement officers have been primarily tearing written warnings for first offenses in an attempt to educate the public about the new law. But as of Jan. 1, -state and county law enforcement officers are issuing tickets to violators. Sgt. George Corson, safety education officer of the McHenry County Sheriff's Department, said sheriff's police officers are now issuing tickets. A violation of the act can result in a $25 fine for a first offense. Other funding for the program, which hopes to obtain 175 infant seats and 25 toddler seats for rental, is expected to be raised by Jaycee Women in Cary, Harvard, Crystal Lake and Woodstock, she said. McHenry County sheriff's police and the county board are aiding the project, Van Treese said, which is being done with the cooperation of area, hospitals. Funding will also be solicited from private donations, she noted, with the name of the company or person who donat either $25 or $30 for an infant or toddler restraint emblazoned on the seat with a small plaque.
