FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 3, 1944) William Pries, owner of the Central Market, located on Green street, McHenry, plans to build an addition to the rear of his place of business and install a new locker system. The plan calls for 400 lockers, of which 250 will be installed when the place is o|«BBd (or business. MB. Pries is required to secure a number of applications for lockers in order to get a priority for the building and lockers. He is contracting prospects at the present time and reports that his proposition is being welcomed by a large majority. Serving with the military police overseas is Alfred Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter F. Miller, who will have seen three years of service next June. Alfred was inducted at Camp Story hours at Johnsburg library The Johnsburg District Library, 2404 Johnsburg Road, will again be offering story hours for kindergarteners starting Friday, Feb. 10. There are two sessions at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on four separate dates, Feb. 10, March 9 and 23, and April 6. He replaces Dr. Carlton E. Wittenberg of Woodstock, who died last summer. Dr. Frank Harris of Richmond is new vice-chief and Dr. John Paul of Woodstock is secretary. About SO interested persons, r e p r e s e n t i n g v a r i o u s organizations and subdivisions in the community, were present at a meeting held to make plans for the possible construction of a swimming pool at some future date. William Bolger headed the discussion and presented a city map, showing areas which might be available for setting up a park or a pool. A committee has been ap­ pointed to study the problems with the hope of bringing the, matter to a vote by June of this year. It consists of Royal Ber- nier, Ralph Bennett, Edward Thennes, James Hettermann and Carol Bolger. TEN YEAR AGO. (Taken from the files of Jan. 30, 1974) Gasoline-or the lack of it-is the biggest news in McHenry except for the New Year weekend, when lines formed rivaling those in metropolitan areas in the east, last weekend provided the greatest "crisis" for motorists who needed, or wanted to travel. Miss Ann Frisby, at 91 one of the oldest lifelong residents of McHenry, died Jan. 28 in McHenry Hospital. Until her illness last Septentfar, she had spent almost a half century engaged in some type of newspaper work. For many years she was known as the "Personals" lady for the Plaindealer, a column in which she contributed until two months ago. She also worked as McHenry correspondent for the Elgin Courier News for more than 40 years and for a brief period wrote for the Waukegan News Sun. Defenders have help in January recycling drive The McHenry County Defenders and their Huntley* Union-Marengo Prairie Com­ mittee will again be conducting a recycling drive Saturday, Feb. 4, at the West Campus of McHenry Community High School, 4724 West* Crystal Lake Road. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., they will be on hand to receive recyclable items. The H.U.M. prairie committee has been given permission to manage a strip of prairie along the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad right-of-way between Huntley through Union, Marengo and on to the Boone County line. Funds are needed for signs identifying these areas as one of significant natural importance and seeking the cooperation of visitors to the area in preserving it. Experts consider it to be the finest remaining natural prairie in the county. Items which can be brought to the drive and which will help these organizations carry on their work are: newspapers with no_junk mail or magazines, cardboard and brown paper bags tied in manageable bun­ dles, used motor oil, containers with all plastic and metal removed, "tin** cans rinsed and flattened, aluminum scrap of all kinds and 100 per­ cent aluminum cans. The Defenders pay 33 cents per pound for crushed ail-aluminum cans, 31 cents for uncrushed cans. In addition, the McHenry County Defenders conducts a pay-back program for glass containers and 100 percent aluminum cans on the second Thursday of each month. This drive is held in the rear parking lot of McHenry Quick Oil Change, 4000 W. Elm, McHenry from 9 a.m. to noon. Entrance is made via Borden Street. In addition to the usual rate for aluminum cans, they will pay 1 cent per pound for glass con­ tainers.
