Hurricanes shock Lake Zurich By Brian Spears Shaw-Free Press Service WOODSTOCK - Hie Marian Central Catholic Hurricanes continued their winning ways with a 65-63 win over Lake Zurich Tuesday. The Bears were in second place in the Northwest Suburban Conference coming into the contest, with the loss dropping them to 6-2 in the league, while MC improved to 7-3 conference and 11-5 overall. Once again, free throws played a key role in the Hurricane win. The team hit 25-of -34, led by Andy Hartlieb with 13-of- 14 from the charity line. Marian fell behind 8-1 in the early going, but changed defenses and rallied to narrow the deficit to 13-10 after one quarter. "It was a case where we had three or four shots that bounced out. That's when we went to the full-court press and from the zone defense to man-to-man," MC coach Hans Rokus explained. "Our game plan was to start with the zone and see how they reacted to it, then adjust it." The Hurricanes rallied in the second period, scoring 21 points to Lake Zurich's 12 and taking a 31-25 lead. Chuck Hartlieb led the second quarter offense with eight points. However, the third quarter was a different story. Die teams started the second half trading baskets, but Marian had a three and one-half minute dry spell where it didn't score in six trips down the floor. Meanwhile, the Bears climbed from 42-35 to take a 43-42 lead with eight unanswered points. Finally, substitute Tom Will came through with a pair of layups, each three point play opportunities. He converted on one of the two, and the 'Canes regained the lead 47-45 going into the final eight minutes. "When Dan and Chuck got into foul trouble, I thought both Chris Brown and Tom Will did a good job coming off the bench and giving us a lift," said Rokus. Marian never trailed again in the game. Andy Hartlieb opened the final period with a short jump shot and a pair of free throws, as the Hurricanes widened their lead. They went ot the delay offense for the last four minutes, forcing Lake Zurich to foul. Marian hit 10-oM4 free throws in the fourth to keep the Bears at bay. "Our strategy down the stretch was what we've been doing all year - we go to the spread out offense and get it in the hands of Andy, Chuck or Jeff, and they have to foul," Rokus said. Trailing by four with just a second remaining, LZ's Roman Mueller narrowed his team's losing margin to two points with a slam dunk. Andy Hartlieb led all scorers with 25 points. Chuck Hartlieb netted 14, while three other Hurricanes had seven points. All five Lake Zurich starters were in double figures in the game. Bill Rabeor led with 14. Mueller and Rich Tauras had 12, while Dean Murin and Joe Mikusa added id each. Mueller, 6-foot-ll junior, led his team's second half comeback, scoring all of his 12 points in that half. "They're a real good ballclub. They're well coached and they execute really well," Rokus said. Johnsburg shooting for realistic fifth at NWSC When Mike Roberts talks about Saturday's Northwest Suburban Con ference wrestling tournament this Saturday, he is realistic. Realistic, Roberts knows his squad doesn't have chance for first, second or anywhere near those top places. His squad finished fifth in the NWSC dual season, and Roberts says thats where his squad should finish Saturday. Johnsburg finished with a 3-4 record, while Grant has the best record at 7-0. Round Lake was second with 6-1, Wauconda 5-2 and Grayslake 4-3. Lake Zurich eas 2-5, Marian Central 1-6 and Marengo 0-7. "It would be nice to surpass Grayslake. That's shooting high. We certainly^ want to maintain the fifth spot," said Roberts. "That would be a jump from eighth last year to fifth this year. If we could jump three spots next year, that would be a dream. Realistically we should hold onto fifth." The preliminary round starts at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lake Zurich, with the wrestlbacks at 1:30, semi-finals at 6:30 and finals 7:30. Roberts squad will feature some inexperience and experience. The inexperience lies in the lower weights. "The lower weights have a lot of fresh men. I don't expect the world of them and I don't expect them to win anything. But a couple of them might be sur prising. Those kids should pick up some points for us,"i Roberts said. Carl Arnolds will lead-off the Skyhawk lineup at 98-pounds with a 2-0 NWSC record and 2-2 overall. Dave Shedbalker will wrestle at 105-pounds at 1-1 in conference and 3-2 overall. - Joe Dzorak, with no varsity ex perience, will fill the 112-pound position. At 119-pounds, Terry Eisler will wrestle with a 2-2 NWSC record and 4-4 overall. Jim Walker, with a 3-3 conference record and 12-8 overall, will wrestle at 132-pounds. At 132-pounds( MikebCahill will carry a 2-5 NWSC record and 7-13-1 overall record. The 138-pound spot was not filled by Roberts as of Wednesday. Ken Hansen, without conference experience, will fill the 145-pound spot. He is 2-5 overall. At 155-pounds, Mark Dumelle holds a 4-3 NWSC record and 16- 9 overall. Bentley Treat, 2-4 in NWSC and 4-9 overall, will wrestle at 167- pounds. Johnsburg will not wrestle anybody at 185-pounds. Heavyweight Jim Bentz will carry the best record for the Sky hawks into the meet, 5-0 in the NWSC and 14-2 overall. Marian Central will be led by Mark Wohnrade, who has only one loss on the season at 112-pounds. He was a state , qualifyer last year at 105-pounds. Two others expected to do well for the Hurricanes will be Steve Stilling at 138- pounds and Tony Piwowarczyk at heavyweight. MCC cagers fall to Truman Shaw-Free Press Service CRYSTAL LAKE - McHenry County College men's basketball team resembled two different squads Tuesday night. The host Scots, who trailed Truman College by eight points at half time, turned things around in the second- half. a But it wasn't enough as Truman won, 98- 91. "In the first half they just pounded us on the boards. We were giving them the second shots and we were down by eight due to rebounding. They just killed us," MCC coach Mike Cappaccio said.
