PAGE 20 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 8, 1984 let's talk Laux, I.C. too much for McHenry to handle Bv Dick Rabbitt ELMHURST - The Im maculate Conception Knights soundly defeated the Warriors last Saturday night in Elmhurst 71-40. It was the combination of poor shooting, weak defense and the outstanding play of Knight guard Andy Laux that led to the Warrior defeat. * ~f"' Laux, the senior 6-foot-5 all- state candidate was a thorn in the side of the Warriors all night. Not only did he hit five-of- seven from the field and three- of-three from the charity line, but his passing to the open man for a basket made life miserable for the local crew. "We were just outmanned," s;id McHenry coach Ken Ludwig. "They have a fine ballclub. Our shooting and shot selection, especially in the first quarter, didn't help us." The Warriors were 20-for-51 from the field and were shutout from the free throw line, missing on eight tries. "You can't say too much about this game, however, we were intimidated by their size and they play a very physical game," Ludwig said. The Knights jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead before Mark Peterson's basket got the Warriors on the board. Play was ragged by both teams as the Knights increased their margin to 11-2, when Scott Freund hit the hoop. Pat Dunne's field goal and Peterson's second basket narrowed the margin to 15-8 at the end of the first period. The second period was the same as Colligno, another fine player of the Knights, took charge and picked up 10 of the Knights'points in the period as the hosts led 29-16 at the in termission. In the third period, Laux decided to shoot over the Warrior zone, instead of being the playmaker, and his three quick baskets had the Knights off and rolling to a 35-18 lead. Dave Toussaint and Corey Scott got the Warriors back on the scoreboard, but Ron Schmitt hit two long ones for the Knights and they led 45-26 going into the final period. The bright spot in the Warriors play in the final period was the shooting of Toussaint. The young senior for the Warriors canned five in a row, all from 15-feet or further, to keep the Warriors respectable. Bentz steamrolls NWSC, Skyhawk squad fifth LAKE ZURICH - Take it from Marian Central's Tony Piwowarczyk - Jim Bentz is no inexperienced wrestler. Bentz continued his complete mastery of wrestling in the Northwest Suburban Conference by claiming the heavyweight title. A senior, it is only his first season in the sport on a high school team. B e n t z d e f e a t e d Piwowarczyk 9-4 in the championship match during the NWSC meet at Lake Zurich Saturday. All-in-all it wasn't a bad day for the Skyhawk squad. The Skyhawks were shooting for fifth, a spot they held after the dual season. When the meet was all over, Johnsburg was holding the fifth spot. A total of three other Skyhawks joined Bentz as place finishers. As expected. Grant won the team title with 197 points, Wauconda was second with 189, Round Lake 147 ii. Grayslake 75, Johnsburg 61. Marian 42 and Lake Zurich 39. "That was our goal," said Johnsburg coach Mike Roberts. "Looking back, it was possible to catch Grayslake. But I'm happy where we finished." Roberts knew why Bentz won the title over wrestlers with twice to three times more experience. "Because of the tremendous discipline and competitive nature he has. He doesn't like to lose. He didn't have one close match." 7 • He practically destroyed each of the wrestlers who stood in his way for the title. He pinned John Meind- shauser of Lake Zurich in 52 seconds and defeated Steve Roe of Grant 7-1 in the semi finals. It was Johnsburg's first conference winner in wrestling. "I just can't say enough about the kid," said Roberts. Jim Walker at 126-pounds and Mark Dumelle at 155- pounds took thirds for Johnsburg, while Terry Eifler earned a fourth at 119- pounds. AAohnen won the semi-final heavyweight match 13-11 to advance into the title match againt Carnell Washington of Woodstock. No surprises at FVC wrestling championship McHenry settles with 4th, Woodstock wins title The Fox Valley Conference wrestling Championships was not for anybody who loves surprises. To the disap pointment of those looking for the big upset, it just wouldn't be at McHenry's Buckner Gym last Friday and Saturday. Everything just fen into place the way it had ended after the dual season. Woodstock easily won the title, followed by Crown- Dundee and Crystal Lake South. The McHenry Warrior squad had to settle with a fourth place. It was a jump of two places for the Warriors, who were sixth last year. But it was still somewhat of a disappointment for coach Marty Sobczak. He had his heart set on third or second. "A lot of people came up to me and said I should feel good. It was a) pretty good showing igaiD^t a pretty good field of earns," Sobczak said. "I'm real pleased-with 113 points. You have to be scoring points to get up there." w« <2 A total of eight Warriors placed, but neither of them were able to win a title. Heavyweight Dan Mohnen came the closest, finishing second. "The only mild surprise was the amount spread between the teams," said Sobczak. Wood stock scored 236 points, well over Dundee-Crown's 191. Crystal Lake South was third with 150 and McHenry 113. Crystal Lake Central followed with 66, Jacobs 60 and Cary- Grove 49 Mz. Mohnen raised his record to 20-12 for the season by capturing the second place. He lost his bid for a title when he was pinned at 1:45 by Woodstock's Carnell Washington in the finals. Mohnen reached the finals by gaining a bye and defeating. Mike Piskula of Jacobs 13-11. Russ Bunday (105), Ric Connor (119), Bob Sarabia (126) and Jeff Greany (185) all took thirds for the Warriors.
