New legislation affects council election SIX HON 50 YEARS AGO (Taken from the Tfles of Feb. 15, 1934) It has just been discovered that the last regular session of the Illinois general assembly made important amendments to the cities and villages act, one of the changes being in relation to the election of members of the city council. The law, as amended, provides for the election of the full membership of the city council at one time, beginning with the election to be held in April, 1935. The old law provided for an aldermanic election every year to elect one alderman from each ward, leaving a holdover member of the council in each ward. Howard Cairns, commander of the McHenry Post, American Legion, has announced his candidacy for the nomination for county clerk on the Democratic ticket, to be voted at the primary on April 10. Mr. Cairns is 38 years old and was born and raised in McHenry county. He has the backing of the local Democratic organization. 40 YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 10, 1944) This is your last chance to purchase War Bonds in the present Fourth War Loan drive which will be over Feb. 15. At that time the McHenry township quota of $241,500 must be met or the people of this township will have failed to "go over the top" for the first time in this war. During the Third War Loan drive we did a mighty job ac cording to all reliable reports. While the results of that drive were the most effective on record, almost half of the nation's population did not buy extra War Bonds.
