I have spent a lot of time in doctors' waiting rooms this winter. Recently I picked up a magazine that was right up to the date. You won't find many more recent than that one- August, 1982. Looking at pictures on the walls, one can recognize that each doctor has a different taste in the world of art. So I Hear by Earl Walsh Wonder if their wives pick out the pictures for them? Naw --I don't think so. Some of those splashes of paint are kind of weird. Something I am going to have to correct -- meeting somebody I know in a doctor's office and saying, "How are you?" We know darn well if they were fit as a fiddle they wouldn't be going to see a doctor. The wait wasn't so long, but after looking through a couple of magazines, sleep hit me. One of my favorite nurses came in and said, "Mr. Walsh -- Good morning!" After weeks of X-rays, needles to see how much life is left in me, an imaging machine that sees through your whole body like your wife sees through your mind, traction and twists, a light is shining through that says I may be in shape to plant a garden when the sun gets higher. The Illinois magazine printed our official state song. Wonder how many know it? It was one of the songs my mother used to sing. Seems to me she was always singing while she worked. Anybody want us to print the song? Ed Reid read about our magazines from other states and came to our door with one from his native state called NEBRASKAland. They say one is never too old to learn. With these magazines, I'm learning and loving it all the way. Now comes Dan Justen to our door with a Notre Dame magazine. He wants me to read an article "For Fifty Years The Irish Ruled Chicago." Of course, there are other articles, but Dan wants me to be sure to read about the Irish. That shouldn't be hard. When friends come a-callin', it makes this column writing easy. Keep calling and sending in contributions. It is estimated that I have only 156 more columns to write before retirement. Florence May returned from Arizona and called to tell me "Zeke" just got home from a stay in a hospital. I take it from the report he is doing real well for a man of his age. Reports are still coming in recalling the days when kids slid down the schoolhouse hill. Laura Smith called to say they went across the street to the Empire Theater and picked up old seats which were discarded. Laura recalls a time when her brother, Bob Sherman, lost a tooth in a collision with Paul Overton. They rushed Bob up to Dr. Aicher's office for repairs. There is a big problem in our house. We have a fireplace that burns wood. I like it. Alvina wants a gas burning unit. No ashes. I keep looking for a gas burner that doesn't have the same color (one color) and same pattern of flames. If I can find one, I'll surren der. Hank Tonyan says they still have one of those old fashioned ice cream freezers that are cranked. __ As a boy, my interest in our back door neighbor, Will Wentworth, grew as summer progressed. He made ice cream.. I turned the crank for him and was given the privilege of licking the dasher. 2-2-84 . "Dear SIH: "Your stories of your Grand ma's farm on the Irish Prairie, brought back the memtfry of our hair raising introduction to the country. We were,. 4 and 6, when our Grandfather bought the John Cleary small farm and moved us out of the city. "The first morning after we had moved in, our Grandmother went out in the yard and fell. The cows were loose in the yard and they gathered around and poked their noses at her. My sister and I ran wildly to the nearest farm screaming that the cows were 'going to eat Nana'. "We got help from the lady we found in the home, and our Grandmother was saved, and it could very well be that that lady was your Grandma. I know it was very near to her farm. "More than seventy years ago! Before your time. "K. Brown" Dear K: That would have been my Grandma. She was an old pioneer who could handle such a situation. For those who may not know, the John Cleary farm was where McHenry Shores was sub divided. Before my time? Huh! You should see my birth certificate. S.I.H.
