I'm not playing Tommy Thompson ' Celebrity' has some autobiographical elements -- but I was playing my version of a journalist who was involved in a crime when ho wae which ata him up throughout his whole life That never happened to Thompson, says Masters Kleber shared certain similarities with Thompson, the late author of such other books as "Blood and Money" and "Serpentine " Both were ambitious Texans who rose from cub report er on a Houston daily to correspondent for Life magazine and then achieved national prominence as a writer of nonfiction books But the resemblance ended there For Kleber -- unlike Thompson -- shared a night of violence with two other high-school friends, which produced a secret that would haunt them for 25 years "Celebrity" traces the impact of the crime, a rape of a teenage girl, on the lives of the "three princes" -- journal ist Cantrell.- con man-turned-evangelist T J L-tither (Michael Beck) and mevie star Mack Crawford (Joseph Bottoms) All three achieve success in their fields, but none can escape the guilt they share for that incident "Celebrity" features a well-written script by William Hanley ("Something About Amelia"), who took over after Thompson suddenly died of cancer in 1982 In addi tion to the performances of the three leads, the supporting cast, which includes Karen Austin as the playwright who marries Kleber wife. Ned Beatty as a flamboyant defense attorney Debbie Allen as a civil rights activist and James Whitmore as a crusty newspaper editor, also boosts the drama Masters says Kleber was the most difficult of the three princes to play "Playing a journalist is not like playing a preacher or actor, who- are more easily recognizable types How do you get histrionic sitting at a typewriter or taking notes interviewing someone9 Vou just try to find the humanity in character, try to make him interesting If I knew how I did it. I don't think I d be able to do it again " "Celebrity" is Masters biggest TV role to date The Oregon native's previous credits include several Broadway and off-Broadway shows It's debatable whether the point of view of the film is that fame <s hollow and shallow -- it may be I'm not famous so I don't know ' says Masters, laughing
