SEglONj^AGEM|ILA^ 15, 19M MCHS students score high in commercial meet ^general News Defer action to allow liquor on MCC campus 50 YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 22, 1934) Grant High School of Fox Lake held an invitational commercial meet between five of the surrounding schools, The McHenry County College Board of Trustees recently tabled a policy dealing with the proposed sale and service of liquor on campus. In a Springfield legislative session, the Liquor Control Act of 1934 was amended to allow the service and sale of liquor on Illinois community college campuses if approved by the district boards. "It came as quite a surpf for us," MCC President Robert Bartlett said. "This board must take independent action on this so there is a local policy established, otherwise the general bill would take precedent." Trustee William Ryan noted: "The thing that happens is if a group of students decides they're going to serve beer in here, you can't stop them. You can't stop them because the board has no policy." The proposed policy restricted the sale or service of liquor on the college campus to specific activities involving the MCC Foundation or board. Bartlett stressed that such events would be held after college hours and must first receive board ap proval. The advantage from such a policy would allow these groups to avoid the expense of holding events with liquor off campus, Bartlett said. "It is conceivable the board will never approve this item", MCC Chairman David Murphy said. "I can't really visualize having many functions at all." TWICE TOLD TALES Edited years^gone including Grant, Warren, Barrington, McHenry and Wauconda. Mr. Anglese entered four of his bookkeeping students and each one of them won a place and received an award. Ruth Klintworth won a gold pin for first place, having a perfect score. Jeanette Lindsay won a silver pin for second place, having only one error. Leander Lay's was a bronze pin for third place, having two errors. In the second contest Delphin Freund won second place, for which he received a silver pin. The city hall, the meeting place of the official heads of McHenry, and the sleeping place of the hoboes in this vicinity, was quarantined over the weekend with a blazing sign of "smallpox" on the door. But do not be alarmed, friends, there was nothing within more serious than a varnished flqor. You see, the CWA workers have been decorating the interior of the home of the city "dads" with paint and varnish and needless to say they chose a neat, ef fective way of telling visitors to keep out. 40 YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 24, 1944) If your gasoline rations expire on March 1, you should file your renewal application at once.
