SECTION 2 - !»AOE 6 - fLAINPEALfcR - WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY ,15, 1984 ^Fffgeneral^^™ News POLICE TICKETS School club aids recycling Thirty eighth graders from Cary Junior High School Science Club will be participating in the Feb. 18 McHenry County Defender recycling drive in McHenry. The drive is held on the fir^Muid third Saturdays of each month in the parking lot of West Campus of McHenry Community High School, 4724 West Crystal Lake Road, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. According to Merle Nelson, sponsor of the Science Club, these boys and girls are no strangers to recycling. They have been collecting aluminum cans for their science laboratory. They hope to earn enough this time to buy a printer for it. To help these groups earn money for their projects, the public is urged to bring any of the following items to the drive: newspapers with no junk mail or magazines included, used motor oil, glass containers with all metal and plastic removed, "tin" cans washed and flat tened, cardboard and brown paper bags tied in manageable bundles, and aluminum scrap of all kinds. Aluminum cans (100 percent aluminum) will be purchased for 33 cents per pound if they are crushed. If uncrushed, the rate is 31 cents per pound. Care should be taken to see that there are no bi-metal cans in the mix. These cans have aluminum tops but steel sides and are not recyclable. If a non-profit organization would like to participate in a future drive, contact a Defender representative at 385-8512. The City of McHenry Police Department has issued the following citations. For Your Information" Dear friends, Occasionally a bereaved person will want to deny the death that has occurred. However, it is necessary for mental health to admit to yourself death's reality, even though it is a painful experience. One of the ways to impress the reality of death is to view the body laying in state. The acknowledgement of death of relatives and friends can then help the bereaved toward acceptance of death and start the wholesome process of grief and recovery. Respectfully, PETER M/3USTEN & SON FUNERAL HOME McHENtY. ILLINOIS - MS-004] shouldn't feel this way. He took care of us kids when we were little, but..." Despite the stories of aban doned elderly, the family is still the most important support system for aging parents. Researchers state that in the United States, 80 percent of all older people have living children, and 75 percent of them live either in the same household or within 30 minutes away. But when you are the one caring for an elderly family member, you often feel isolated and frustrated by the details of daily care. A special workshop for those who provide home care for an elderly family member will be presented Monday, March 5, from 9 until 11 a.m. at Lakeside Center in Crystal Lake. It will be repeated on Tuesday, March 6, from 7:30 until 9:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Harvard. Home care nursing skills will be presented by Virginia Williams R.N. and Kathy Brock, R.N. Topics to be discussed and demonstrated include simple measures to give the elderly person the best care with the least stress on the provider, and thus, allow the elderly in dividual to remain in the family home rather than be admitted to a hospital or nursing home. Some examples might be how to feed someone with a straw, how to help and older person take pills without choking, how to transfer a person from bed to standing or a wheelchair to bed, a safe walking gait, nourishing food alternatives, how to blenderize food to be nutritious and appetizing, and ways to encourage the elderly person to join in meals or family ac tivities. By learning some simple home care techniques, stress can be decreased,, and the relationship between the elderly person and care provider can be satisfying to both. The Workshop will be presented in small groups. Other topics to be discussed are emotional support for families, community resources, and alternatives to home care when necessary. A special group activity is planned for any elderly person who would like to attend with the family member. There is no charge for this workshop sponsored by the Task Force on Aging for McHenry County. For more information, call 338-3590. STYLEUNE "INSIDE"!
