On Thursday, Feb. 16, an authority on the Mennonite religious group and its Amish And Hutterite offshoots will present a program at the Woodstock Opera House as part of the Creative Living Series of morning programs sponsored by the Woodstock Fine Arts Association. The lecturer is Dr. John Ruth, historian, writer, film maker, minister and chronicler of the traditions and faith of the Mennonite, Amish and Hutterite communites. Dr. Ruth was born, raised and still lives in eastern Pen- nyslvania where more than 40 percent of all Mennonite church members are found. He was ordained a minister in the Mennonite Conference at the unusually, young age of 20. He received both his M.A. and PhD from Harvard University in English, and taught literature at Eastern College for 12 years. He was also a guest professor in literature at the University of Hamburg in Germany. Dr. Ruth has written two plays. and six bosks, * including a biography of Conrad Grebel, early leader of the "Anabap tists", as Mennonites were first called. . During the past decade, however, his considerable energies have gone into film making, as writer, director and narrator. Dr. Ruth has eight films to his credit on the lives of the Mennonites, Amish and Hutterites, and he will show films on these last two religious communities during his program at the Opera House. Hie Creative Living audience will be one of the very first to see these films which have just been completed by Dr. Ruth for the 1984 Mennonite World Con ference. Dr. Ruth has a close con nection with Woodstock, for his sister is Eunice (Mrs. Don) Mast, known to many as a teacher of folk music and folk instruments. The program will begin at 10 a.m. preceded by a coffee hour beginning a 9 a.m. Tickets will be available at the door. For further information contact Darlene Fiske at 338-0592.
