Director of Development Bill Bolger, E.D.C. Commercial Chairman Butch Meyer, Chamber Treasurer Keith Leathers, County E.D.C. representative, Bob Morris, and White Hen executive Joe Taylor. Certificates of commendation were presented to the Smiths by the Chamber and the McHenry Area E.D.C. to acknowledge their growth and development and the growth and development they provide for McHenry. On Jan. 22nd, 1983, Pat and Cindi Smith purchased the White Hen Pantry at 4802 W. Elm Street in the Lakeland Park area. At that time they also owned a White Hen Pantry in Mundelein and resided in Wauconda. It took only one month for them to decide that McHenry was a good place to live but at that time they had no idea they would be consolidating their business interest in McHenry as well. Hie White Hen corporate staff recognized the value of the opportunity being presented by the large and vacant parking lot of the old Jewel property. They conducted a survey to determine the market radius of Lakeland Park White Hen Pantry and immediately decided to place a second location on that property. On Dec. 23 at 9:30 a.m. the Smiths sold their Mundelein store and at noon opened then- second McHenry White Hen Pantry at 3808 W. Elm. JULIE gets a million calls Unseen but always present are un derground pipelines, cables and other faculties used by energy, communications and similar companies to provide services that make for a better standard of living. Protecting the structural integrity of these systems from damage caused by digging or earth moving is necessary if major disruptions are to be avoided. That's why J.U.L.I.E. (Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators) was formed. J.U.L.I.E. recently received its one-millionth call for a location and was honored Feb. 9 in a Joliet ceremony sponsored by the Illinois Commerce Commission. The system, one of the nation's best, gives property owners, contractors and .excavators the convenience of contracting owners of underground lines with only one telephone call. Upon notification, member companies locate and mark facilities to BRIEFS TRIVIA WINNERS Ron Bykowski, president, announces that Carol Bradley, Ann Stanich and Rory Marshall of Century 21 Real Estate were on the WIND "Company Challenge ".the local team broke the tie and won an AM-FM Clock radio each and a weekend for six at at St. Charles resort. Before J.U.L.I.E., the system for helping excavators was not streamlined. Con tractors had to call each utility, often not knowing whom to contact or what in formation would be needed. When customers call, (48-hour advance notice is required, excluding Saturdays, Sundays and holidays) they must provide the county, township, seciton number and quarter section, information which can be obtained from property records, tax records or local governmental agencies. Besides coordinating location of utility facilites, oneof J.U.L.I.E.'s main tasks is to keep the public well informed. The cooperation of home owners, businesses and municipalities and excavators is required to ensure the program's success. Services provided by J.U.L.I.E. save utilites and their customers the cost of repairing damaged equipment and the inconvenience and hazard of interrupted service.
