PAGE 23 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. FEBRUARY 17, I\9M_ McHenry, Johnsburg down to one wrestler Not so long ago, the wrestling mats were full of activity at McHenry and Johnsburg every day after school. But now, after a weekend of regionals, the ranks have thinned out considerably. Each school is now down to one wrestler each for this weekends Barrington sectional. Both wrestlers have their sights set on surviving the weekend and making a trip to Champaign the following weekend. Bob Sarabia is McHenry's representative. He placed third in the 126-pound division in Carpentersville Heavyweight Jim Bentz is Johnsburg's qualifier*. He was defeated by Carnell Washington of Woodstock in the title match. Johnsburg would have had a second competitor this weekend, but bad fate struck. Jim O'Brien, a freshman, had qualified for the sectionals with a third place at 132-pounds. He was all set, ready to go. H o w e v e r , O ' B r i e n separated': his shoulder while practicing Tuesday. He will be replaced by the fourth place wrestler at the regionals. Being a freshman and having more chances is the only way to look at it said a disappointed Johnsburg coach Mike Roberts. The preliminaries are set to begin at 5 p.m. at Barrington and continue with the semi-finals on Saturday at noon. Finals will be hald at 6 p.m. McHenry coach Marty Sobczak said Sarabia is all set to wrestle. "He is as close to the top of his game as he will get. It's just going to depend on mentally where he is," said Sobczak. The senior Warrior is scheduled to wrestle Glen Rymsza of Buffalo Grove. If he wins that match, his next opponent would be Scott Paris of Deerfield. Sobczak feels Sarabia can beat toty. "I mw both of them at the team sectionals at fremd. I felt Sarabia can top both of them. That would put him in the semi-finals," he said, "if he wrestles the way he should he will probably take a third." Sarabia has earned a 24- 10-1 record thus far. One of his biggest ac complishments thia season was breaking a McHenry pin record. He pinned Scott Gallego of Stevenson in 16 seconds in a 132-pound match. Roberts talked about the sectionals just before Tuesday's fatal practice. These are our two strongiest athletes in our program. Two months ago I would have said no way these two would make it this far," said Roberts. "No offense to Jim O'Brien, but freshmen just don't get out of the regionals in the middle weights. It's a rarity. - • * W9f X3f v ISM BOB SARABIA 24-10-1 "These two young men will represent Our school in the highest degree. Win or lose, they will have close matches. I'm very proud of these two." Bentz is scheduled to meet Bob Johnson of Antioch. "I'm just going to go as far as my ability can take me," said Jim Bentz, who JIM O'BRIEN 16-7-1 thus far has a 17-3 record. "It was nice to win con ference and regional, but I'm really going to have to wrestle now. I'm going to take some chances. Now the matches are getting tougher and tougher." Bentz is a first-year senior wrestler. > ,i; . Johnburg's Jim Bentz had a difficult time with Woodstock's Carnell wajumiui losing ll'JHT IHTtbgional SHAW-FRIi PRESS PHOTO heavyweight title match. That has become the cry of the Johnsburg Skyhawk boys' basketball team. The Skyhawks edged Lake Zurich 64-59, defeating a second place team in the Northwest Suburban Con ference for the second game in a row. Johnsburg had beaten Marian Central last Friday, who was sitting in second place at that time. Lake Zurich moved into second place tied with Marian in time for Tuesday's game with the Skyhawks. The second win in a row leaves Johnsburg with a 4-7 record in the NWSC and 10-10 overall. The Skyhawks will try and get over the .500 mark against Wauconda tonight. Wauconda is not a second place team, resting on the bottom of the NWSC with a 2- 9 record. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in the Skyhawk gymnasium. Johnsburg coach Ben Beck is happy with the current success right now and is hoping it con tinues. "This was the second straight real big win for us," Beck said. "This is now two good games back to back. Hopefully this is a sight to come for March. We're playing .500 ball right now and it all depends of maintaining the style we're playing right now." Controlling the tempo is the style Beck is referring to. "All but three minutes we controlled the tempo and the shot selection was good. I'm real pleased as a group the transition after baskets. These are things we had to do." The Skyhawks were led by Joe Majercik, who Beck said broke out of a personal slump, scoring 20 points. Jeff Preston helped out with 18. After falling behind 14-8 in the first quarter, the Skyhawks came back to outscore Lake Zurich 22-14 in the second quarter. The Skyhawks were able to maintain that edge through the second half. One of the other keys, ac cording to Beck, was containing Lake Zurich's two big men. Roman Mueller, 6-foot-ll center, only scored 13 points, while Bill Rabeor scored eight. Former Minnesota Vi kings' defensive tackle Alan Page was the first defensive player in NFL history to be named the league's Most Valuable Player. He was selected in 1972. INCOMt TAX SERVICE N I ( .
