But not until this week was it known just how much we had over subscribed the drive. With the original quota set at $240,500, the end of the drive saw $300,595 worth of bonds purchased by the people of McHenry township putting us $64,025 over the quota. rp wice Told Tales Two McHenry servicemen, Lieut. Lee Gladstone of McHenry and Pvt. Gus Hansen of Harvard, are new members of the world famous Seagrave Hospital Unit in China, which has been credited with saving the lives of 2,000 Chinese in the last two years as a result of their excellent care. This estimate of the unusual service of this unit was made by the author of "Burma Surgeon". 25 YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 5, 1959) Four soloists and six en sembles brought home 1 blue ribbon, medals from the annual district music contest held at Northbrook in the most suc cessful year enjoyed by local student musicians in some time. Soloists winning honors were Joann Smith, French horn, and Lois May, flute, both state winners last year, Joan Olson, flute, and Charlotte Houda, mezzo soprano. In the in strumental division, a flute duet, a flute trio and a saxaphone duet rated tops in their classes. Making up the flute duet were Lois May and Joan Olson, flute trio, Joan Olson, Joan Blake and Karen Lombard; saxaphone duet, Dorothy Adams and Bruce Novak. The fast melting snow (and puddles which result) evidently meant an invasion of private property. In front of the Donald Howard residence on John Street, where a small lake existed, extending into the street, a sign was posted which read, "Private, No Fishing." 10 YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 6, 1974) The City Council passed a resolution stating that effective March 6, persons in the city be requested to purchase gasoline according to the. lastkKgitof their, vehicle license number. If the last number in the license plate ends with an even number, the driver is asked to purchase gas on even numbered days of the calendar. If the plate ends in an odd number, one should buy gas on odd numbered days. For months having 31 days, that last day would be open to all. "Fantastic" was the way a representative of FISH described response to last week's appeal asking for help for a victim of the Green Street fire who lost all of her belongings. The Warriors closed out the regular season by beating Crystal Lake in overtime 66-59 at McHenry. The win enabled the Warriors to share 4th place with North Chicago, each with an 8 and 5 record in the North Suburban.
