New look in nursery CONVERSE Men's Fairmont or Women's Chris Evert Tennis Shoes 19 99 reg. 24.99 Love and concern for the small children of the congregation recently inspired some of the adults of Mount Hope Methodist Church in Pistakee Highlands to redecorated and refurnish the church's nursery. Animals from Noah's Ark were drawn by some of the chidren, then recreated on the newly painted walls, along with a colorful rolling landscape and a three-dimensional wooden ark projecting from the window. Cribs and other baby equipment were added, toys were con tributed and the whole room rearranged into a pleasant, functional child-care facility. In addition to using the nur sery during regular church wor ship services, Sunday school, and other church functions, a Parent's Day Out cooperative has recently been organized. One morning a week, parents on a rotating basis serve as care givers in the church nursery for all participating children, while the other parents are free to do as they wish without the responsibility of their young children. On Friday, Match 16, at both the morning and evening Masses after the homilies, there will be the renewal of baptismal vows, the profession of faith and the Papal blessing. According to the Rev. John C. Holdren, pastor, "one will find the approach of the missionary to be positive to encourage you in the wonderful faith God has given you. The program will be instructional inspirational, and a real incentive to be the people God wants us to be and the world needs us to be." BY LAWRENCE W AITHOUSE WHEN THE LION SHALL EAT STRAW Background Scripture: Isaiah 2:1 -'5; 62:65:17-25. Devotional Reading: Isaiah 65:17- 25. I am glad that I was not President of the United States on that September day when the Soviet Union shot down Korean Airlines flight 007 and wantonly killed its 269 passengers. I am glad because, upon learning of this terrible crime, my reaction rose up from the depths of the same human emotions that have perpetuated the ancient trag edy of demanding "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth." And, although that emotion is entirely under standable and hallowed by the civilization in which we live, one does not have to be blessed with great wisdom or prophetic powers to see where it has brought us-not to mention where it could still take us. PLOWSHARES AND PRUNING HOOKS I am very grateful that President Reagan, although shocked and outraged with the rest of us, was able to v withstand those emotions and lead this nation in a response that did not compound one tragedy with yet another. For, when the first tides of anger and horror recede, most of us realize that a vengeful response can only plunge us deeper into trag edy. While experts may ar gue whether a nuclear war would kill all humanity or just a portion, all of us are aware that we live on the brink of our own self-de struction. As never before in our his tory, we are torn between two emotions: a desperate yearning for that long-prom- ised day when "they shall beat their swords into plow shares, and their spears into pruning hooks" (Isaiah 2:4) and a growing despair for peace in a world so divided by ideologies. The downing of KAL 007 makes us won der how peace can be achiev ed when "the other side" is so ruthless and unprincipled. Politically, we may sharp ly disagree on how to deal with the Soviet Union, on what is the best strategy to deter them from aggression and expansion. We will dif fer on the implications of all this for our own program of armament and defense. Yet, despite these honest differ ences, Christians must unite in resisting that terrible temptation to abandon our principles for theirs. For, if we become like them, if we adopt their paranoia, and if we live as though there were no God, no divine plan for this world, then what does it matter who prevails?
