DOC begins campsite reservation program ugh price Cab ride carries The Conservation Department will begin accepting ap plications March 1 to reserve campsites at 17 state parks located throughout Illinois, according to Charles Tam minga, DOC associate director for the Bureau of Lands and Historic Sites. Campers will be charged a $3 fee in excess of the regular camping fees to reserve a campsite. The fee is to cover administrative costs of the program. Campsites can be reserved for a maximum of 14 continuous days between May 1 and Oct. 31. "People have requested a campsite reservation system for many years," Tamminga ex plained. "Neighboring states, such as Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan, have had reservation systems for several years with considerable success and few complaints. We're confident that Illinois' program will be equally well received by the public." Tamminga said the op portunity to reserve campsites should be particularly welcomed by Chicago area campers who complained in the past of driving for hours to reach a state park only to find all the campsites taken. "These people deserve a break," he said. "They need to be assured their spot will be available when they arrive at a park, even if it's 10 p.m." In past years (and this year at sites other than the 17 selected sites) campsites were available on a first-come, first- served basis. "This pilot program will test the feasibility and practicality of a statewide system of cam pground resevations," Tamm- minga said. "DOC will wait to see what the public response is before deciding whether to extend the program, but I an ticipate it getting larger and being expanded to other state parks." The state "parks at which campsites may be reserved for this summer are: Argyle Lake, McDonough County; Chain 0' Lakes, Lake and McHenry Counties; Feme Clyffe Johnson County; Illinois Beach, Lake County; Kankakee River, Kankakee County; Kickapoo, Vermilion County; Lake Le- Aqua-Na, Stevenson County; Lincoln's New Salem, Menard County; Lincoln Trail Homestead, Mason County; Mississippi Palisades, Carroll County; Pere Marquette, Jersey County; Ramsey Lake, Fayette County; Siloam Springs, Adams and Brown Counties; Starved Rock, LaSalle County; Wayne Fitzgerrell, Franklin County; White Pines Forest, Ogle County; and Wolf Creek, Shelby County. Persons wishing to reserve campsites may obtain a reservation application by writing the Department of Conservation, Campsite Reservation Program, 524 S. Second Street, Springfield, m.r 62706. Reservations also may be made by phoning (217) 782-6752. Written applications should be completed and sent, along with the reservation fee, to the park the applicant wishes to camp. Present second program in spring prelude series The second program of the McHenry County Conservation District's series, Prelude to Spring, will be held in the Community Room of the Woodstock Opera House Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 7 p.m. Plants and Their Significance will be the subject of better understanding our natural resources. Floyd Swink, of the Morton Arboretum, will present a slide program showing representative plants of the Chicago region. Wayne Lampa, naturalist with the DuPage County Forest Preserve District, will graphically demonstrate how plant communities are evaluated and the importance of this evaluation in managing natural areas. Ken Klick, a consultant to the Conservation District, will provide an illustrated insight to the plant inventory project being initiated at Glacial Park. Advanced reservations can be made by calling the district office at (815) 338-1405. A registration fee is payable at the door.
