By June Fuller ' .j Dear June: I was out of work most of last year, and during those trying times coupons, refunds and free products helped me to get by. My friends and relatives were wonderful. They gave me all their boxes, labels and whatever they thought would help. It was during this crisis in my life that I found out just how lucky I am. I never realized how many people cared and were willing to help. I am proud to say that I have since begun a full-time job, and even though life is much easier, I am still filled with the memories of how everyone came to my aid. Joan, Oak Park, Dl. Please remind your readers to be honest and seno for only one refund if the form restricts the offer to one refund per name, address or household. Several people have recently told me that they send in several requests for each offer using different names or addresses. Hiis is not only wrong, but also illegal and is considered postal fraud. Just because a person purchased several products does not give that person the right to send for the refund more than once if the offer is limited. If we want the companies to continue making these offers, we must show some respect and follow the rules. -LeeAnn Citrowske, Clarkfield, Minn. Dear Lee Ann: I agree with you 100 percent! Fortunately, most people do respect these valid offer restrictions. Honest refunders realize that they are printed on the refund request form for a purpose and that the offers wouldn't work without them. Dear June: Sometimes when I am ready to send for a refund, it is not convenient to tape or staple proofs of purchase to the refund form or a piece of card* board. When this happens, I put my "brand" (my first initial and last name) on each proof of purchase with a colored felt tip pen. This gives me some piece of mind and I can rest a little easier knowing that the person who checks the POPs with my request will be able to pick out my proofs if they should ac- cidentially be dropped or mixed with others. - Diane Baker, Canton, Calif. Dear Diane: Thanks for the good tip. In most cases, I try to staple my proofs to a piece of cardborad and write my name and address on the back. This is the safest way to send your proofs. Theyfcl know If It didn't! 7 life "When I say 345, I'm not talking small potatoes. "I'm talking three hundred and forty-five thousand volts. "That's what the lines on those big towers carry. That's what makes them the backbone of our whole trans mission system. A kind of electricity expressway that covers all of northern Illinois. And a whole lot more. "Hooks us up with just about every utility from the Atlantic to the Rockies. "The reason is protection.- "So even if the weather does its worst, even if you can fry an egg on the sidewalk or see your breath making icicles, and even if a number of our senerators quit on us whole sale, we can keep the power coming. "No blackouts. No downtime forv factories or businesses or homes. No inconvenience for anybody. Not for long. Not if the 345 can help it. Bill Dunbar, Electrical Er^meer Commonwealth Edison "You better believe we really look after a lifeline like that. Which is a job in itself. There are 2300 miles of it in northern Illinois alone. And to spot a problem an>where along the line, you have to be right up there where it is. A copter's the only way. "Fixing a problem is no picnic either. Climbing a tower a hundred- fifty, two hundred feet high is tough, even when the wind isn't blowing. Neither is changing a two-hundrea- pound string of insulators, especially if it's a live line. "It's hard work. Dangerous work. But it's got to be done. And done right. "It goes with the territory'.'
