Marian council looks at falling enrollment By Kurt Begalka Shaw Free Press News Media The Marian Central Catholic High School Council of Ad ministration discussed the problem of falling enrollment at the school recently I. "I thought everybody was going to be knocking down the door to get in here," Rev. Salvatore Guagliardo, a councilman, said. "What happened to our great increase in enrollment?" Principal Thomas Landers said that the state 2A football championship was a "fringe benefit," rather than a major selling point for the school. The interest is genuine, but the numbers are lacking, Landers said. Marian had about 400 eighth grade graduates to draw from throughout the county just two years ago, he added. "The Catholic grammar schools are generating about half (today)." Landers said 132 eighth graders took the placement test, and 97 have enrolled. The composition of the other classes next year are: 87 sophomores, 77 juniors and 86 seniors - a total of 347 students. This represents a decline of 30 students from 1983-84, fueled in part by a large graduating class of 114 seniors, Landers said. Nontheless, he said he remains optimistic that another 10 students will register in the near future. The Rev. Dorrance Tranel, another councilman, questioned why the same number of ad ministrators were needed now, compared to when enrollment was nearly 800. "I don't foresee cutting the number of administrators but a redefining of staff respon sibilities," Landers said. He pointed out that assistant principals, the Rev. Donald Smithes and Robert O'Mara, teach extensively in the classroom, which was not done in the past. The Rev. Smithes teaches 16 periods each week, and The Rev. O'Mara teaches 11 periods. That is equivalent to a full-time teacher, Lander said - a savings of about $13,000 an nually. The staff salary scale for 1984- 85 was presented to the council. It represents a 7.5 percent raise, Landers said. The average salary for the 19 teachers will be $15,952. Total salaries equal $73,500. • Landers added that salary increases for administrators are being considered and have not been finalized. The next council meeting is at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 19, at the school. The budget will be presented. Landers said the role of Marian's administration will be studied. "I'd like to review the resumes of the administrators before they move into the classroom," said Councilman Jeff Ladd of Crystal Lake. "I can see the justification as long as they are doing something else besides ad ministration," the Rev. William Joffe, another councilman, added. In other action: ...The council voted to retain Landers as principal, following approval by the Diocesan Office of Education. ...Discussed the 1984 Chocolate Drive, to begin Friday, March 2. Landers said the school grossed $26,000 the past two years, which is used to provide financial aid to needy students. The school received about 45 percent of that, after the cost of candy and prizes were deducted, Landers said. A suggestion by Ladd to change the product for sale was defeated, despite the fact that several council members acknowledged they have candy in their freezer. "I can eat 20 chocolate bars, but I can't read 20 magazines (subscriptions)," said Richard Barthuly of Wonder Lake. This year's goal is $16,920. Other financial help for students comes from the Father Eugene Baumhofer Scholarship Fund, in which there is a balance of $4,000 presently. Landers said a push for donations to the fund will be made in conjunction with Marian's 25th anniversary celebration scheduled for'June 23.
