SECTION 2 - PAGE 10 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, MARCH 2^1984 general News Use of drug lecture presented to NIMC Voter league to explore women's rights in state The Woodstock-McHenry League of Women Voters will present a program of vital in terest to all women, single or married, at its March meeting on Thursday, March 8,9:30 a.m. at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 404 N. Green Street, McHenry. A League publication, "Guide to Women' Rights in Illinois," will serve as a basis for ex ploring topics such as marriage, separation, credit record and credit problems, child bearing decisions, dissolution of marriage, child custody and child support. One area of great concern and interest is finances. There will be a questionnaire for those in attendance that will test one's financial knowledge in the areas of taxes, wills, life insurance, real property, investments, expenses, home owner's in surance, and documents. This will be a thought provoking and stimulating discussion. Because it will be a long meeting, all those attending are urged to bring a brown bag lunch as the program will conclude in the afternoon. All League meetings are open to the public, and this one will especially provide useful in formation for all women. The guide is available and may be ordered. Baby sitting will be available at the church. For further information, call League president, Barb Marrs, 35-1434. OFFER MEALS The Neighborhood kitchen which serves free meals in St. Patrick's Church hall each Tuesday evening continues to grow in the number who attend. Individuals and families who are in need of this service are encouraged to visit the kitchen any Tuesday between 4 and 7 p.m. Shown, left to right, are Edward F. Robert Harner, MD, associate professor of cardiology at the University of Illinois, Rockford School of Medicine, was a recent guest speaker for Northern Illinois Medical Center's department of medicine mon thly meeting. Doctor Harner addressed the topic travenous use of the streptokinase, which research has indicated could help prevent critical damage to the heart muscle during a heart attack. This new drug is used in some instances to dissolve the blood clot that forms in the coronary arteries of the heart, thus ranging a heart attack. Hie potential patient must meet several criteria before strep tokinase can be administered, however, as it will not work for all heart attacks. The most important requirement is speed. The drug must be administered within the first four to six hours following onset of heart attack symptoms, to save the heart muscle that has been deprived of oxygen. Recently, it was sucessfully used on two patients in the hospital's emergency depart ment. Research is continuing on the effects of streptokinase, but is has proved its usefulness in some instances of heart attack, increasing the chance of sur vival from the nation's leading cause of death, heart disease. For more information on streptokinase or on heart disease, contact the cardiac rehabilitation unit of Northern Illinois Medical Center, 815-385- 2200, extension 707.
