PAGE 14-PLAINDEALEH -WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7, 1984 let's talk ^ Sports Lady Scots blast Elgin for sectional title Shaw-Free Press Service McHenry County College's women's basketball team used an unusual but successful game plan to win its first sectional tournament Saturday night. MCC started . the game missing nine of 10 shots, helping Elgin Community College take a 10-point lead. But the Scots recovered and trailed by three at halftime. They dominated much of the second half, leading by nine points, but then allowed Elgin to whittle that to two. But the host Scots outscored Elgin 10-4 down the stretch to post a 69-59 win. The section V tournament title gives MCC a berth in Region IV play this weekend at Triton College. The Scots will play Joliet in a first-round game at 12:30 p.m. Friday. A regional championship sends MCC to the National Junior College Tour nament. "The most important thing in basketball is if you are behind to make it up in 10-point runs. We have proved we can make a 10- point run at anybody and our kids have a natural knowledge of that. Once we got the lead we just toyed with them, dangling the game in front of them and then pulling ahead," MCC coach Bob Edwards said. The lead changed hands several times before Elgin trimmed MCC's advantage to 53-52. Baskets by Diane Pilgard and Cheri Bacon gave MCC a 57- 52 lead with 3:40 left. The Spartans came within two at 59-57 with 1:12 left, which is where MCC made its final run. Two Bacon hoops and another Pilgard bucket made it 65-57 with 37 seconds left. Deb Minogue then iced the sectional title with four free throws over the last 18 seconds. Bacon led all scorers with 30 points, missing her season high by one. Pilgard added 17 and Minogue chipped in 10. MCC (12-9) advanced to Saturday's title tilt with a 76-55 win over the College of DuPage Friday night. New rules not favorites with area coaches I don't know if it has always been this way, but it seems every year, in every sport, in every level and in every league - rules are always changed. It gets to the point where you need to have an updated rule book next to you whenever you watch the NFL, college basketball and others. Even high school athletes and coaches have to live with changes within the rule book. Although the basic characteristics of the game are kept intact , changed rules do have a definite effect on a particular sport. Illinois high school basketball has been no exception. Before the 1983-84 season started, the people who make all the big decisions in the IHSA, decided to make a few adjustments in the rule book. One rule was already actually in the rule book, but was never enforced faith fully. The other was a complete change and did have an effect on how the game was to be coached and played. Now that this season is practically history, it might be a good time to evaluate these rules. The first one is the bench rule which basically says a coach's bottom should alway be on the bench, unless a timeout is called, its between quarters or the game is over. This rule has been on the books for some time, but never enforced unless a coach said some not-so-nice things to the referee. Now the referee's have been instructed to hit the coach with a technical if he leaves the bench, no matter what. Well, if you are any kind of basketball Sport Talk by Mike Lamb Sports Editor fan, you know that's pretty tough for some coaches. Sometimes watching the coach pace up and down the floor in professional and college ball becomes just as entertaining as the game being played. A good coach with a lot of emotion is fun to watch. But high school coaches haven't hit the big time yet, and have to live with a rule which says you must let the players play the game without your help. "To stop the coaches from getting up and directing his players - I don't believe in it," said McHenry coach Ken Ludwig. "They are telling us to shut-up and let the kids play. But name me another sport where the coach sits down and lets the players play. Basketball is the only one." Johnsburg coach Ben Beck believes in the rule. "I think its a good rule. A coach should coach and a officials officiate. Most officials are using good judgement," said Beck." I would like to see the rule changed so a coach can walk up to his players to talk about a play." Ludwig's conference rival Ken Slimko, coach of Jacobs, hasn't been that worried about the rule. "The referees are not looking to give you a technical. If it's obvious, you will get one." While the bench rule has its friends and enemies, the second rule change, hasn't had too many flag waving reviews. This one allows a team two timeouts a quarter, instead of the once five a game. The rule change of timeouts was basically made to speed up games. There was too many complaints of coaches saving most or all of their timeouts for the last two minutes of the game. "It stinks," said Slimko. "It has cost us some bailgames here and there. If you use one of your two timeouts in the fourth quarter to stop momentum, you're down to one. It hurts the guy with the less experienced team. They say you should use practices to show the players the plays, but sometimes you need a timeout to draw it up and show it again." Beck and Ludwig agree. "I would like to see the old rule back," said Beck. "I would like to see five timeouts a game. This new rule gives the advantage to the team with the better athletes. We have played several game where it has made a difference. "I see the reasoning that it (old rule) slowed the game down. They could do other things. It (new rule) limits the players and it limits the things we can do," Beck added. "It's a terrible rule. It takes a lot of strategy out of the game," Ludwig said. The Warriors only managed to hit on 35 percent of its shots, while Jacobs shot a very respectable 52 percent. Each team hit on 20 fieldgoals. Jacobs received its edge over McHenry in the free throw department, hitting on nine free one's to McHenry's three. Scott's Jump shot tied the contest at 4-4. Jacobs then went on to hit on three straight fieldgoals for a 10-4 lead. McHenry was able to come within one at the end of the first quarter, 12-11. Slimko and McHenry's William Schmitt traded baskets, but Jacobs would outscore McHenry 11-4 the rest of the half. Slimko's shot Final Fox Valley Boys' basketball with two seconds left on the clock gave Jacobs a 25-17 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles built up its largest lead at 12 on a lay-in by Paul Adams and a turnaround jumper by Andy Harris. The Warriors came back with two straight baskets of its own on a jumper by Scott and a rebound shot by Peterson. One of the big keys in the game was Peterson. Jacobs managed to hold the 6-foot-6 all- conference center to just three points. The two teams continued to trade-baskets until Harms and Chris Baine hit for Jacobs and Jacobs had a 11-point lead, 35-24, after three quarters.
