The Warriors meanwhile, couldn't score as freely as Slimko and his Jacobs teammates, and fell for the, count into third place for the season. The Warriors finished the regular season with a 8-14 overall record and 6-6 FVC record. Jacobs finished with a 7- 5 FVC record and 16-9 overall record. "Slimko is the best player in the conference. It seemed everything that he shot went in," said McHenry coach Ken Ludwig. The loss was a hard one to take for the Warriors. They held second place for most of the second half of the season. "I just can't fault the kids on their intensity level. They just have problems scoring," said Ludwig. "It's a tough loss. The kids played real hard. The effort and intensity was there." While both teams did play with intensity and Jacobs had no problem scoring, both teams had a problem hanging onto the ball. If it wasn't going into the hoop, the ball was going places neither team intended. A total of 47 turnovers were recorded on the contest, with Jacobs taking top honors with 25. "That's a lot of turnovers for this late in the season. I wish I had an explanation," Ludwig said. Craig Hill's lay-in which gave McHenry a 2-0 lead was the only time McHenry led in the contest. Jacobs first qaurter lead was small, 12-11, but the Golden Eagles gradually built up its lead. By halftime it was eight, by the third quarter it was 11 and it was 10 early in the fourth quarter. The Warriors were always within striking distance. Unfortunately, when the Warriors received some fire power to make a comeback bid, time wasn't on their side. Dave Toussaint came off the bench in the fourth quarter to score 12 points for the Warriors and ended up sharing team scoring honors with Corey Scott. Toussaint hit three straight jumpshots early in the fourth quarter to push McHenry within 37-31. Two free throws by Jacobs' Joe Lopinsky in terrupted Toussaint's shooting exhibition. But Toussaint came right back with another jump- shot. The 6-foot-l senior hit on two more jumpshots to continue as McHenry's only scoring threat. "Dave did a good job coming off the bench," said Ludwig. Ludwig's problem was nobody else on the Warrior squad was hitting. "We took 57 shots to their 38 and still loss. Right now we're Continued on page 14 m11 >. *4 STAFF PHOTO-MIKE LAMB REACHING HIGH -- for the loose ball is AAcHenry's Terry Schmitt and Jacobs' Andy Harris. The Golden Eagles used their height advantage all night to beat the Warriors for second place. Peterson ends FVC career on honor list MARK PETERSON Mark Peterson, the lanky 6- foot-6 senior center, was the only McHenry Warrior chosen by Fox Valley coaches as an all- conference performer. Peterson was one of 12 players placed on the FVC squad. The FVC champions, Woodstock Blue Streaks, and Cary-Grove placed three players each on the squad to lead all teams. "Mark really worked hard. I'm glad he's getting the honors right now," said his Coach, Ken Ludwig. "He didn't have the year he is capable of having, but he worked hard." Peterson led McHenry in scoring in all games with a 12.2 scoring average. He was second on the team in conference scoring \yith a 10.8 average. Because of a sluggish last few games, his conference statistics suffered. "He was not feeling well the last two or three weeks and was not at full strength," said Ludwig. Peterson's 6-foot-6, 220-pound frame helped him grab 400 rebounds in his 2 years on the players chosen was the fact each had two players among the top seven scorers. Brad Hutter was fifth in scoring with a 14.7 average, while teammate Jeff Harris was sixth at 13.8. Hutter was an unanimous pick. The Trojans' Dave Ward was second on the scoring list at 16.9 McHenry varsity squad. He led_jxiints a game, and he also was the team in that department this season with 163 rebounds. Of any department, Ludwig said Peterson was the most consistent at rebounding. . His shooting wasn't all that bad either. He shot 45 percent from the field with lOfr fieldgoals. He shot 65 percent from the free throw line with 42 free hots. Combined, Peterson scored 260 points on the season. One of the reasons Woodstock and Cary-Grove had three an unanimous pick. Brad Block, also of Cary, was seventh in scoring at 12.8. Woodstock also placed Greg Bradshaw on the team and Cary-Grove Chris Vodermark. Other unanimous picks in cluded Mark Slimko of Jacobs, Corky Card and Todd Howell of Crystal Lake Central. Howell was the leading scorer in the conference with a 18.8 scoring average. Regional Monday. Central trailed 24-14 early in the first half, but Central came back to take over the lead, 34-33. Corky Card of Central led all scorers with 18 points. NWSC coaches honor Jeff Preston and Hartliebs Johnsburg's Jeff Preston ended his Skyhawk basketball career on a high note when he was placed on the Northwest Suburban all-conference list with 11 other top players. The Marian Hurricanes placed two on the squad. Both Hartlieb brothers, Chuck and Andy were chosen by the coaches. Grayslake's Todd Parola was the top pick, as he was honored as the most valuable player on the squad. "He was our floor leader and he came through for us when we needed the points," said Johnsburg assistant coach Dave Dombroski on Preston. The 6-foot-3 forward led the Skyhawk team with a 12.1 scoring average and shot 42 Continued on page 15 MIRE WE CROW AGAIN!
