Kelley, who is the first woman to be appointed an assistant to the probate judge in Chicago, was once a resident of McHenry, where she is remembered by many friends. She lived here with her parents while she was studying law and has been practicing law in Chicago since October, 1911. Riverview Camp of the Royal Neighbors of America celebrated its twenty-third anniversary on March 13. Fifty- two members of the order were present, including past oracles and eleven charter members, who were honored guests of the camp during the evening. Miss Elsie Vycital was mistress of ceremonies and gave a very interesting history of Riverview Camp. Talks were given by the oracle, Mrs. Calla Perkins, and by Mrs. Henry Vogel, oracle of Fox, River Valley Camp, who was a guest for the evening. the files e, • TWICE TOLD TALES Edited from our files of years gone by 40 YEARS AQO (Taken from the files of March 16, 1944) With all the grim news that war brings, it is with genuine pleasure that we take note of the advancements of our boys and girls in service. This week it is Sgt. Curtis Newman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Newman of West McHenry, who takes the spotlight for a recent com­ mendation. At the recent quarterly inspection of Jef­ ferson Barracks, Mo., it was disclosed that Sgt. Curtis G. Newman, a member of the headquarters squadron and assistant inspector of funds of the air inspector's department, was deserving of commendation .for his efficient and thorough Operation of unit and similar *; funds which is reflected in the '-drastic improvement of con- • ditions of all funds in that office. •; The proud possessor of his navy wings of gold is LeRoy, ; Hettermann, son of Henry '"Hettermann of Johnsburg, who graduated as a flyer and received his commission as ensign. 25 YEARS AQO (Taken from March 12, 1959) A most successful day of recollection was held at the two Catholic churches in McHenry. At St. Mary's Church, the Rev. Ft. Raymond Wahl, chancelor of the Rockford diocese, con­ ducted the program attended by 208 girls. At St. Patrick's church, 190boys were instructed by the Rev. Fr. Raymond Costello, MSC. superior of the Sacred Heart Monastery in Geneva. Congratulations are in order for St. Patrick's parochial school in McHenry, whose pupils won a plaque for top sales record of the diocesan paper, The Observer. Allen Miller of the sixth grade, and Grace Weber of the seventh grade, who tied for first place points, will accept the plaque and award at the bishop's dinner honoring contest winners. The narrow escape from death of Lieut. James Obenauf of Grayslake in April of 1958 is so unique that his story of such outstanding heroism will be told on NBC-TV on March 16, on Goodyear Theatre, called "The Obenauf Story". 10 YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 20, 1974) Dave Benrud is the new president of the McHenry Rotary club, serving from next July 1 through June of 1975. Newly elected officers are Don Howard, vice-president; Don Gerstad, vice-president; Dennis Conway, treasurer; Ed Cepulis, assistant secretary; Ken Bruce, secretary; Jerome Bush, Bob Adams and Jim Wegener, directors. Martha Rabbitt, a junior at McHenry's West Campus, has been selected by a vote of the faculty to attend Girls State this year under the Legion auxiliary sponsorship program of citizenship training. Martha is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Rabbitt. Denise Higgins was chosen alternate. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Higgins of Wonder Lake. Jim Heard, a 1970 graduate of MCHS., closed out a brilliant career at Huron college, Huron, S.D. Jim set a new all time Huron college individual scoring record for a single game when he scored 40 points in a 82 to 81 loss to Dakota Wesleyan.
