Call 815-728-0424 EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY SHAMROCK REALTY (815)728-0424 "Oh, that's just baby fat. She's pleasingly plump." Such a comment may be reassuring to parents, but many "pleasingly plump" children end up as adults with serious weight problems. About 10 percent of American school aged children are overweight, says Judy Reinke, clincial dietitian. If weight problems are not identified and overcome early, some of these children will become overweight adults - and risk the associated chronic health problem. "It's important for parents to recognize that a child may have a weight problem," says Ms. Reinke, "then to look for the cause. It might be overeating or insufficient activity, or both." Often, parents can help their children overcome weight problems by encouraging more physical acitivity; at other times, they may hae to cut down on the child's food intake. It's easier to control the intake of a very young child as opposed to an older child because parents can monitor the availability of foods. Parents can also help their children develop sensible ways of eating, says Ms. Reinke. "Let children indicate how much they want to eat, instead of insisting they clean their plates. Allow children to have some say in what they eat - but limit the amount of high-calorie, low- nutrient foods that are available. If vegetables aren't eaten at mealtime, offer them raw, perhaps with a low-calorie dip, as a snack." Children can respond naturally to feelings of hunger, as long as we let them. "By allowing children to follow their own hunger signals and providing them with a good, balanced diet, they may be less likely to develop poor eating habits that can contribute to weight problems." Preventing weight problems early not only establishes good eating habits, it also may prevent overdevelopment of fat cells, says Ms. Reinke. Ac cording to the "fat cell" theory, weight gain during infancy and adolescence may increase the number of fat cells in the body, instead of just increasing the SIT** of existing cells. Once this happens, losting weight becomes more difficult. Although the fat cells can shrink to hold less fat, the number of cells will remain, ready to pick up any extra fat. Fat cell numbers may also regulate hunger. / Reinke discourages parents from putting their children on strict diets. "Reducing portion size and cutting down on sugary, fatty foods that contain con centrated calories are usually enough." she says. This allows a* child to "grow into" his or her weight. *5.00 - Va HOUR SESSION SUN TANNING WE TAMED THE SUN... .. .and made it comfortable!
