Marian tops in J.E.T.S. competition SECTION 2 - PAGE 3 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. MARCH ». 1*H Thomas Landers, principal of Marian Central Catholic High School, announces that the Marian Central J.E.T.S. (Junior Engineering Technological Society) team won first place in the district competition held recently at McHenry County College. In Class A, the Marian Central team received 10 of the possible 18 medals awarded for biology, chemistry, English, graphics, math, and physics. In biology, Kim Kaminski, daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Vincent Kaminski of Wonder Lake, received a third place, and Marian Asfeld, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Asfeld of Woodstock, received a second place. In English, Kristin Malaker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Malaker of Marengo, received a second place, and Marian Asfeld and Andrea Leslie, the latter a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Leslie of Woodstock, both received a third place. Kim Schuler, daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Joseph Schuler of Wonder Lake, received a first place in graphics. Dave Gaff- ney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gaffney of Lake-in-the-Hills, received a second place, also in graphics. Jim Peschke, son of Mrs. and Mrs. John Peschke of Woodstock, received a first place in math and in physics. Andy Belmonte, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Belmonte of ScEools ® Marian art students entered in fair Marian Central Catholic High School Art students will par­ ticipate in the Northwest Suburban Conference Art Fair. It will travel from school to school within the conference to allow students and the public to appreciate the talents of the Art students. The fair began March 6 at Marengo High School, where the various conference schools assembled their Art students for a special program. The Art projects will be at Marian Central from March 12 through March 15. On March 13 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the Art works will be on display lor parents and the public. Students will be able to take advantage of viewing the Art projects during the school day. Diplomas for 1,743 January graduates of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will be mailed to recipents in March. The diplomas represent 1,150 undergraduate and Woodstock, received a third place in physics. David Antonacci, math and science teacher at Marian Central, coaches the team. He felt "There is nothing more exciting in the educational field than to see students strive so enthusiastically for excellence. It was pure pleasure to ac­ company such a wonderful group of kids. We at Marian Central are extremely proud of each student's ac­ complishments." Antonacci and the Marian Central J.E.T.S. Team received their awards from McHenry County College President Robert Bartlett and John Horner, state director of the J.E.T.S. competition. The Marian Central team will proceed to the regional com­ petition to be held March 15 at Northwestern University. B.S. DEGREE professional degrees and 593 advance degrees. Among those receiving degrees was Keith Dwyer, 8405 Burton Road, Wonder Lake, a BS degree. -- TOP STUDENT "Once Upon A Mattress" offered in spring at Johnsburg High Because of his high academic achievement during fall 1983 quarter, Paul J. Metzger, 4301 N. River view Drive, McHenry, has been placed on the Dean's List with highest honor. The announcement, signed by Ed­ ward Robinson, dean of students, read: "Your work is in keeping with the high traditions of Northeastern University and of education in general. I hope that you will continue your excellent achievement during the remainder of your time in shcool and therafter." Johnsburg High School Theatre has announced the cast for the spring musical "Once Upon a Mattress". The musical comedy will be performed April 12, 13 and 14 in the Johnsburg High School Theatre-in-the- round. "Once Upon a Mattress" is a hilarious adaptation of the fairy tale "The Princess and the Pea". The musical was first performed on Broadway in 1959 with Carol Burnett in the lead. Heading the cast of the iohnsburg production are seniors Kathy Wester and Scott Tvaroh and junior Missy Davis. Kathy, a veteran of 10 JHS Theatre productions, will play Queen Agravain. Scott plays King Sextimus the Silent and Missy plays Princess Winnifred. Sophomore Brian Dunivan plays Prince Dauntless, who is hoping that Princess Winnifred is a true blood princess so his mother will let him marry her. Juniors Chap Hughes and Ed Foster will play the Jester and the Minstrel respectively. Other lead roles will be taken by Senior Rick Schaller as the Wizard, junior Carrie Boike as Lady Larken and junior Dave Hanomoto as Sir Harry. The knights will be played tyr, Ken Schoenig, Jon Wills, Dave Rucker, Jeff Preston, Tony Zaremba, and Mike Burg. Nine students graduate from NIU Nine McHenry area students were among 1,394 people to receive degrees at Northern Illinois University (NIU), DeKalb. From McHenry, Susan Marie Becker, 1807 Woodlawn Park, received a B.S. degree; Mark Daniel Mantsch, 1410 Sunnyside Drive, received a B.A. degree; Felicia Jo Soavo, 1021 W. River Terrace, received a B.S. degree; Richard Joseph Som- pel, 3711 N. Spring Grove Road, received a B.S. degree; and Suzette Lynn Sund, 715 Broadway, received a B.S. degree. • Roxanne R. Nimsgern of Spring Grove graduated with a B.S. degree. Wonder Lake students, Dave Gerard Kozial, 4605 W. Shore Drive; Penny Sharon Moline, 4329 E. Lake Shore Drive; and Evelyn Carol Raske of Wonder Lake, received B.S., B.S. and B.F.A. degrees, respectively. The actresses playing Ladies-in-Waiting include Gail Wroblewski, Lisa Kelly, Candi Kilcoye, Samantha Scolaro, Lesly Davidson, Mary Dvorak, Laura Shiman , Arlet Mann, and Lisa Carlson. Dawn Dagens plays the kitchen wench and Laurie Mellum will be Princess No. 12. "Once Upon a Mattress", will be the first JHS musical to be performed completely in the round. It will he directed by Johnsburg High School Theatre director Roger Zawacki. Musical director is by Hal Thompson, assistant director is Julie Sprague, and the choreograph is by Mona Salinas. Tickets will be on sale from cast members and also will be on sale at the door at each performance. Senior citizens will be admitted free of charge to the performance Thursday, April 12.
