MARCH 14. 1984 Hands Across the Border is a citizens' group of survivors who have experienced a death in the family due to drunk driving over the border of Illinois and Wisconsin. The Northern Illinois Council On Alcoholism in its ongoing free community education series at Grant Community High School will present Hands Across the Border co-chairman, Joe Schaberger, at 7 p.m. Friday, March 16. Hands Across the Border, since its inception in 1980, has championed for better laws, better enforcement of those laws, and also to support and encourage grants for safety programs. Schaberger, who has a dedication to this cause will inform what has been ac complished, as well as how he and Elizabeth Canuteson organized the border group. Hands Across the Border has presented 122,000 names on petitions to influence • the unifom_drinking age. This and other community efforts were accomplished by devoted sur vivors. Schaberger is a resident of Wildwood. He and his wife lost their only son in a single car accident following a drinking party in Wisconsin where the 20- year-old namesake could legally drink. ^Fffgeneral̂ ^™ news The public is invited to attend. ̂ Grant High School is located at 74 E. Add to aging series topics Freeze-thaw conditions close parks throughout the state Flooding, thawing and muddy conditions have closed sections of many Department of con servation properties throughout the state, or have prevented public use of some of their facilities. While announcing the annual state of thaw-related closings, a traditional harbinger of spring in the state park system, many sites also listed anticipated re opening dates for their shower buildings, closed in the fall to prevent winter damage. Since weather and climatic conditions at this time of year are subject to rapid change, persons planning to visit any of the parks are advised to call the site in advance to learn the status of the lands or facilities they wish to use. State sites that have an nounced restrictions on specific facilities or areas include: Chain O'Lakes, Lake and McHenry counties, cam pgrounds and some picnic areas closed; also Illinois Beach State Park, near Zion - Camp Logan area and most of the roads leading to it are closed. The state properties presently are open in entirety: Volo Bog State Natural Area, Lake County, and Moraine Hills State Park, McHenry County. The Northern Illinois Medical Center (McHenry Hospital) four-part series "A Program on Aging", has been extended due to demand. Edward F. Wilt, Jr., MD, completed his segment of the program, "The Physical Changes of Aging", on Wed nesday, Feb. 29, the date originally scheduled for the lecture, "Nutrition, Diet, and Exercise for the Older Adult", the nutrition and exercise lec ture will be held Wednesday, March 14, at 3:30 p.m. in the employee dining room of the hospital. This lecture will be presented by Barbara Zinkann, registered dietitian, and Wagn Son-, dergaard, registered physical therapist. Both speakers are on staff at Northern Illinois Medical Center. An additional lecture will be held Wednesday, March 28, also in the employee dining room, at 3:30 p.m. It is not necessary to have attended each of the sessions in the series on aging to participate in future segments of the program.
