The opening was attended by a variety of candidates from the 10th and 12th districts. The highlight of the day was the announcement of a rally planned for March 16 at the College of Lake County. John Glenn will appear at the rally scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. 50 YEARS AGO (Taken from the flies of March 15, 1934) Walter Carey arrived home Saturday from a trip via the Greyhound bus line to Tucson, Ariz., where he spent about two weeks with his wife before going on to California and the West Coast, returning to Tucson before making the trip home. Leaving here with his little son, Dick, on Tuesday noon he arrived at Tucson Saturday morning, riding day and night with four changes made in buses while the drivers work only in eight-hour shifts. v Raymond Howard, Jr., who is in his first year at William Penn college, Oscaloosa, Iowa, has received his sweater and letter in football. He is expected home on March 23 for a 10-day vacation. 40 YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 16, 1944) The Plaindealer is most sincerely grateful for the check of $200 presented to us by Paul Yanda and his school musical organizations. This money was the result of the recent band concert, the entire proceeds being given for sending newspapers to the servicemen and women. State Rep. Thos. A. Bolger has announced his candidacy for reelection. Mr. Bolger's Op­ ponent at the primary is Theodore Renich of Zion, who was the Democratic candidate for state senator in 1943. Not only students and faculty members of the local high school but the great many people who have become acquainted with Malcolm Mclntyre during the past two years were sorry to learn this week that he will be leaving our city sow to join Uncle Sam's vast army. Among them was Richard Herdrich of McHenry. Herdrich, son of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Herdrich of McHenry, is a cadet lieutenant in the ROTC unit, sports editor of both school publications, a letter winner in tennis and a four-year classical honor student with a 96 percent general average at the semester. A younger brother, Donald is a sophomore at Campion. Five McHenry High School seniors were among 2,996 named by Gov. Stratton to receive state scholarships through the state's scholarship program. They were Richard Anonson, James Jones, Richard Smith, Ronald Smith and Donothy Cook. March 19 is the date set for annual guest day, when members and guests of the Women s Society of Christian , Service will meet in the church parlor of the Community Methodist church to hear Ann Varese review "Hie Scarlet Lily" by Edward J. Murphy. 10 YEARS AGO, (Taken form the files of March 22, 1974) By A vote of 7 to 1 the City Council moved not to recognize the Combined Counties Police Association as a bargaining agent for the McHenry Police , Department. On roll call vote to reject the CCPA, Alderman LaVerne Hromec cast the only no vote. Alderman William Bolger, who made the motion to reject the CCPA, stated that he had heard favorable comments from several officers on meetings held recently with the Police Commission. The majority of the aldermen seemed to feel that since the Association of Police Com: missioners had recently been. empowered to handle police department grievances, it should be given every chance to succeed. MCHS Warriors placed four basketball players on the all county team. They were Steve Himplemann, Steve Buss, Steve Koerber and Tom Stark.
