\ SECTION 2 - PAGE 11 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, MARCH 1»84 Boys regional tourney a huge success and bouquets are in orter to McHenry High School for putting on a most successful regional basketball tourney last week at Buckner Gymnasium. Principal Greg Johnson, Athletic Director Joe Schlender, Ticket Manager Marty Mullen and all the rest of the people who had a hand in making it one of the most successful tourneys in McHenry High School history. Everybody should feel quite proud of the Job they accomplished last week. The attendance for the four nights was ' cloee fo 3,000 fans, and They indeed got their money's worth throughout the tourney. Crowd control was very much in evidence,. and not a single incident marred the tourney. With Crystal Lake Central playing South and McHenry against Johnsburg, officials did not know what to expect. They were well prepared, but the fine sportsmanship shown in these games is what one ex pects of good high school rivalries. I talked to a lot of fans from the various schools and they had nothing but good things to say about the tourney. It is too bad one of the IHSA officials didn't take the time to come to McHenry and see a first class operation. On the Sideling Dick Rabbitt i, but the big question - will the championship return to the Chicago area? Last year's winner Springfield is is no longerln die tourney. Tfie best bet to keep tee title downstate is either Peoria Manual or Carbondale and they may not be playing in the tourney after this week. My pick is a Chicago team. A Chicago team is about due to bring home the big trophy. The Warriors really put on a good show before bowing to Woodstock in the finals. Playing their best game of the season, the locals had their fans on their feet time and time again with their fine play. Falling behind early in the contest, the Warriors rallied to grab a three point lead midway in the third period. Led by Craig Hill, who had his finest game as a Warrior (26 points), had the champion Blue Streaks wondering what hit them. However, in the long run, the taller' and more talented group from Wood stock hung on to win. The final score of 84-72 doesn't tell the true story of the game. In the closing minutes the Warriors had to foul to obtain the ball, but the Streaks rose, to the occassion and made the necessary charity tosses to ensure the victory. The Warriors are also hosting the girls regional this week, and again putting on a first class operation. Bad weather has to take some of the blame for the low attendance at Monday's opening games. Crystal Lake Central defeated McHenry, while Johnsburg defeated Woodstock. It was disappointing to see a small handful of Warrior followers at the Monday game. At last week's i games Warrior fans were all over the place. Girls basketball in McHenry is not too popular, or there would have been more fans in attendance. Patty Johnson, the smallest player on the floor led all scorers with 18 points in the loss to Central. Don't forget the baseball clinic tomorrow morning at East Campus Gymnasium. McHenry High School is putting on the clinic for the young baseball players in the area. Coach Brian Wilson of the Warriors will discuss fundamentals with both the young people and their parents. The clinic will start at 10 a.m. and last until noon. Well this is the week a lot of good high school basketball teams go by the wayside in Illinois prep circles. With 64 teams playing in class AA, after tonight it will be down to the sweet 16. No doubt there will be a few upsets this Down memory lane we go back to 1971 at Elgin Larkin for the regional game between the Warriors and Marian Central in probably one of the most thrilling games in the regional history in this area. The Hurricanes won in triple over time, 81-76, with Randy Jackson scoring 38 points for Marian. Bruce Harbecke led the Warriors with 18. It was a game that anyone present will never forget, especially the players involved. McHenry 75 Harbecke 7-4-3 18, Hosier 8-1-4 17, Gehrke 4-1-19, Miller 4-2-4 10, R. Miller 4-2-4 10, J. Miller 5-0-2 10, Hoffman 4-1-0 9, Fenner 1-0-2 2, totals 33-9-16 75. Marian Central 81 Jackson 16-6-4 38, Bolton 6-5-4 17, Weingart 6-2-1 14, Fontaine 2-3-2 7, Kiefer 1-3-1 5, Harrison 0-0-0 0, totals 31- 19-12 81. McHenry 1617 1915 4 4 0 -- 75 Marian 18131719446 -- 81 HUTTER WENT FROM continued from page 12 wanted to be as good as he was," Hutter said. ~ Hotter made the freshman team and, despite being his first year in the program, impressed his coaches enough to be moved up to the sophomore team. That's when the road became full of bumps. And losing became an everyday oc currence. "Because I was one of the bigger kids, and they needed big kids on the sophomore team, I was moved up," he said.J'I was playing against guys who were a year older than me, who were as big as me and who were a lot stronger. I was always getting beat up in practice. I hated to go. Everyone was so much better than I was." But the constant work against tough competition gave Hutter an edge. He was constantly being shoved around. So he learned to shove back or be pushed out of the gym. And that was the beginning of the losing. "We (the seniors on this year's team) had played together since seventh grade. When we became freshman, (Greg) Bradshaw and I were moved up to the sophomore team, and then sophomore year Harris and I were moved to varsity, then Harris was moved down and Bradshaw was moved up. "It seemed a couple of key players from each team were always missing, We never had a chance Jo j>lay together." SEE THE ALL NEW 19S4 Crowing Pontiac-Cadillnc Dealer! Try outs for team selection will be as follows; The losing became more frequent, Hutter said, and the attitude that pervaded was negative. Things got so bad, he said, "that it got to the point where we didn't care if we lost. That has to be the worst I've ever felt. Nobody cared." And when the Class of '84 seniors got their first chance to play together, last year, they had a new coach to deal with and the bugs that come from lear ning new plays, defenses and strategies.
