Educatdrs speak to North Central conference - SECTION 2 - PAGE 5 - PLAINDE ALER - WEDNESDAY. MARCH 21, lt84 0. Gregory Johnson, principal of McHenry High School West, and Norbert F. Wolter, assistant superintendent of the McHenry School District, have been in­ vited to speak at the 1984 annual meeting of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the largest of the six r e g i o n a l a c c r e d i t i n g associations that serve the nation. The conference will be held in Chicago from March 25 through 28. "The Development of a Community-Wide Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Program" will be the topic of their presentation. Johnson notes that "drug and alcohol abuse is a growing problem in our nation, one that must be faced realistically by every community." He and Wolter will describe the "CCA: A Better Way" program in McHenry that involves educators and com­ munity representatives in a plan focusing on continuing education about the problem, community action, and the development of a community center for youth. Johnson has been principal of McHenry West since 1977. He is a graduate of Illinois State University and Roosevelt University. Wolter joined the McHenry staff in 1976 and became assistant superin­ tendent in 1983. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois. Hie NCA annual meeting is attended by more than 3,500 educators from the 19 states served by the association. Those in attendance are represen­ tatives of elementary and ScKools ® secondary schools, colleges Traveling art show in Johnsburg For the first time, the Nor­ thwest Suburban Conference is sponsoring a traveling art exhibit which will be shown at each of the schools in the con­ ference for one week during March and April. Tbe exhibit will consist of 10 or 12 works of art, two-dimensional and three- dimensional, entered by each school in the conference. The exhibit opened March 6 at Marengo High School. Thirty art students from Johnsburg High School, accompanied by in­ structor, Sue Kapraun, attended the opening-day program, which included setting up the exhibit, a presentation by an area artist and finally the viewing and refreshments. The traveling exhibit will be on display at Johnsburg High School this week. Some of the JHS students represented by their works are Jason Anderson, Missy Christie, Sally Kearns, Lisa Tihinen and Kathy Wester. Those who would like to see the exhibit may visit the Johnsburg High School auditorium prior to the spring sports banquet, Wednesday, March 21, from 6 to 7 p.m. Visitors may also see the exhibit during school hours. Sue Kapraun, art teacher, is shown with student, Missy Christie. Coughlin Quincy resident assistant Linda Godley, dean of students at Quincy College, has announced the names of 16 students named Resident Assistants (R.A.) for the 1984-85 academic year. These students work under the direction of the counselors-in-residence at the college. Among them is Larry Coughlin, freshman psychology major, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Coughlin of McHenry, appointed to Centennial Hall. Resident Assistants are provided with extensive training so that as student paraprofessionals they are able to assist each student with his or her own personal growth and development; are familiar with the services of an environment in which students can best meet their academic responsibilities; and are able assist students with activities in the residence hall.
