SECTION 2 - PAGE 11 - PLA1NDEALER - FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 1984 Long road to Champaign finally ends The long high school basketball season will finally end this weekend with the state finals in Champaign. As of this writing (Tuesday evening) there are 16 pretty good teams still in the running for the class AA title. Fox Valley champion Woodstock lost a heart- breaker in the final seconds to East Rockford last week in the sectional finals. We were hoping the Streaks could advance to the sweet 16 to give some recognition to the FVC. The last second basket turned the cheers into tears, and now Rockford East must take on powerful Aurora, according to some, the best team in the state at this time. Picking a winner of the remaining teams is like trying to pick a NCAA winner at this time. Anyway, there should be some pretty goocjhigh school basketball on the tube toitight and tomorrow. The Warriors went out in grand style, putting up a good fight against jWood- stock. The? won 10 games this season, a few wfore than most of us thijQght they would win. Things look kind of bright for Coach Ken Ludwig next season with three regulars returning. Maybe that seven- foot transfer from Germany will arrive in McHenry and give the locals a boost. Brian Wilson has his baseball team working indoors, in preparation for the opener in early April, if the snow is gone. Also, Dan Boland has his thinclads running in the cold to get into shape for the track season. These two coaches, like the golfers, are hoping for some quick warm weather. The sooner, the better. On the Sideling Dick Rabbitt With elections being held this week, a few schools in the area have to be con cerned. Grayslake, Lake Zurich and Wauconda are a few schools feeling the pinch. Wauconda just had varsity athletics this past year, and it didn't make them any too popular in the North west Suburban. If Lake Zurich and Grayslake voters turn the schdols down, it could cause additional problems for the NWSC. Rockford is another place where there is a problem. A few years ago, Rockford dropped all athletics for a year, and it is possible they may do the same again for he coming year. That leaves Harlem, Hononegah, Freeport and Belvidere tyring to fill the schedule. This is really nothing new, as a lot of schools are dropping all or part of their athletic programs due to lack of funds. Woodstock seems to get along okay, thanks to a good booster club that gives.a lot of help to the athletic program. Of course, students have to pay to par ticipate not only at Woodstock, but a few other schools in the state. From all reports, more students are participating than ever before in schools requiring paying to play. I don't believe in the idea a student should have to pay, but if it solves the financial problem and will keep the program, I would have to agree it is the only solution. There are answers and solutions to these problems, but they don't belong in a sports column. With the winding up of high school basketball, what would be a better way to close out memory lane, than going back to 1952 when the Hebron Green Giants captured the hearts of all of Illinois. The Giants with an enrollment of 92 students won the state tourney defeating Quincy in overtime, 64-59.1 know a lot of you Warrior fans attended the games at Champaign, as well as during the season. The Giants defeated Champaign 55-46 in jthe first round. In the quarter-finals they defeated Lawrenceville 65-55. In the semi-finals they got by Rock Island 64- 56. The finals saw the game tied 14 times, Schulz making the basket in the closing seconds to send the game into overtime. With Quincy center Bruce Brothers on the bench having fouled out, the Blue Devils were no match in the overtime for Hebron, and the McHenry County crew took home the big trophy. Hebron 64 Wilbrandt 3-4-410, Phil Judson 3-6-3 12, Schulz 12-0-2 24, Paul Judson 6-1-3 13, Spooner 2-1-3 5, totals 26-12-15 64. Quincy 59 Fast 3-4-4 10, Gower 5-1-2 11, Brothers 8-4-5 20, Payne 1-0-1 2, Harvey 2-4-2 8, Thompson 2-4-0 8, totals 21-17-14 59. let's' talk (Plaindealer photo by Wayne Gay lord) Patience is a virtue as Kevin Barry's steady hands are busy con structing a fly. FLY continued from 12 Laura Jensen FVC's player of the year By Steve Metsch Plaindealer news service If Reggie Jackson is the straw that stirs the drink, Laura Jensen is the girl who makes the Tigers roar. The senior's take-charge attitude was one of the main reasons why Crystal Lake Central, which wasn't considered much of a threat in the pre-season, wound up seven points from the Fox Valley Conference Championship. Whenever Jensen was on the floor, spectators were guaranteed a 100-percent effort on both ends from the 5-foot-ll for ward. Her fiery play ignited the Tigers and won her the Shaw-Free Tfete NfeWqjafcer Group's 1983-84 FVC Girl's Player of the Year honors. Her coach, Linda Brady, was the winner of the Coach of the Year award by the newspaper group. The road to success began when a summer basketball camp coach roared at Jensen before her sophomore year. "He yelled at me and got me to do what I was supposed to do. I wasn't very aggressive and I was just kind of there," Jensen said. Since then, an aggressive approach has been her calling card. A talented three- sport athlete, Jensen prefers basketball. "It's more Dhysical and faster moving. I just like more physical contact. In softball and volleyball, you have to stay here and can't go over the line and hit someone. If than an elbow in the stomach. Jensen's 18.25 scoring average was second in the FVC only to Jacobs sophomore Heather Rayka (19.4). Finishing Number two for the second straight season and 15 points from the title gnawed at Jensen for a while. "I was a little disappointed, but I think I'd rather have beaten Dundee-Crown for the championship. We just didn't play well at all," she said. The Tigers iost the March 8 title bout 55- 49, but not before Jensen put on a fourth- quarter clinic. In typical fashion, she scored 13 of her game-high 18 points with bead*. oring, though isn't her top prjprity. "I like jumping. I enjoy picking up loose balls and that," said Jensen. Sophomore Tania Brammer, an all-FVC teammate, and senior Jean Barry joined Jensen to provide Central a formidable front line. All three pulled down their share of boards and complemented each other well on offense. "Jean and I worked very well together. She'll drive and dish it off to me, or she'll shoot and I'll be in rebounding position," Jensen said. "Tania has come a long way." Brammer's emergence as a scoring threat took some pressure off Jensen, but she still drew extra attention, especially in the paint. Besides Jensen, the Shaw-Free Press all- FVC team included Michele Zimmerman of Hie second consisted of Sue Hoppman of Crystal Lake South and Sherri Stoltman of Jacobs at the guards; Beth Buhrow of Dundee-Crown at center; while Maureen Feely of Crystal Lake South and Tania Brammer of Crystal Lake Central at the forwards. taking a trip to Texas. "I'm going down to Texas, but I could go to Alaska and bring essentially the same equip ment," said Barry on the ver satility of fly fishing. Barry not only practices the art of fly fishing, but he has been teaching it also. "It's fairly easy to learn. You can easily learn the basics in 10 minutes. Getting to fish with flies, opposed to casting out, takes a couple of weeks." According to Barry, the best fly fishing occurs at the most comfortable time for people. "The most corpfortable time for page humans is the most comfortable time for insects - the middle of the day." When Barry goes fly fishing, it's a vacation for both his wife and him. "She enjoys it her self," said Barry. "She goes crazy when she catches a fish." His wife likes to eat fillet pan fish, but for the most part, Barry doesn't even think about keeping a fish for eating or mounting purposes. When he catches it, it goes back into the water. He fly fishes for the sport of it. "They can give the next guy as much fun as they gave me." v c*- MITCHELL BUICK-OLDS-CMC TRUCK IN McHENRY PRESENTS ITS' MARCH"GOLD MEDAL" VALUE you're mad at an outfielder, it doesn't help crystal South and Terri Mangold of to hurt the catcher," she said. Dundee-Crown at the guards; sophomore That's not to accuse Jensen of playing like a roller derby queen. Her keen shooting eye and rebounding skill inflict more pain Heather Rayka of Jacobs at center; while Stephanie Miller of Dundee-Crown joining Jensen at forward. Is it a foul ball or a fair ballf...Oddly, despite Its name, the foul pole is actually In fair terrltory-- so if a ball hits the foul pole, It's a fair ball. Here's a surprising fact... Despite all the great players in college bask etball in recent years, the record for most points in one season set by Pete Maravich 14 years ago has never been broken...Maravich, playing for LSU, scored 1,381 points in the 1969- 70 season, and no col lege player has ever topped that total-be fore, or since.
