V Burlington Central cuts down Hurricanes By Sam Natrop Plaindealer news service BURLINGTON - In Monday night's sectional semifinal win over Kaneland, Marian Central's girls discovered that holding the opposition to four points in one quarter cleared the path for a relatively easy win. W e d n e s d a y n i g h t , however, the Hurricanes were on the other end of the stick. Getting only two buckets in the second quarter, Marian's outside shooting resembled that of the weather outside as Burlington Central won its own Class A sectional, 43-32. The Rockets will meet Lamont, a 49-38 winner over Ridgewood, in Monday's Super sectional. After jumping to an 8-6 first-quarter lead, the roof caved in on the Hurricanes. Nancy Walsh's 16-footer at the 7:50 mark of the second period upped the lead to 10-6. However, the next Marian points didn't come until :19 remained when Chris Ferrero canned a short jumper. By then, the Rockets (who weren't exactly setting field goal shooting records them selves) had erased the four- point deficit and opened a 15-12 halftime lead. Marian shot a miserable 20 percent from the floor (13-of-65) while Burlington Central shot 38 percent on 14-of-37. Things didn't go much better at the free throw line where the 'Canes hit just 6-of-13 attempts. "We missed a lot of shots and the kids got tighter as the game went on," Marian Coach Don Penza said. "If they had sunk one or two of those shots in the second quarter, they maybe would have relaxed a bit. Every shot they took was either pushed or thrown right up there." "But we got frustrated and we let our missing get to us.' Part of the credit for Marian's misery goes to the triangle-and-two defense employed by Burlington Central. The strategy, where the defense plays man-to-man defense on two players and a triangle zone under the basket with the other three, shut down the outside shooitng proficiency of Walsh and Beth Penza. Meanwhile, the big Rocket front-liners formed an impenetrable wall around the hoop shutting off Marian's rebounding effort. "I think their defense had a little to do with our poor shooting," Don Penza said. "Plus, they had the home court. That gave them a little advantage. Overall, though, I thought they did a good job on us." The Hurricanes, who lived by outside shooting for a majority of their wins throughout the season, finally died by their inef fectiveness afield. They finish their season at 17-9. In that awful second quarter, Marian missed 15- of-17 field goal efforts. In the meantime, the Rockets connected on 5-of-7 tries and added a pair of buckets. They took the lead for good on Michelle Butt's free throw with 3:11 until half- time. What turned out to be Marian's last gasp came late in the third quarter. Trailing, 21-15, Penza hit the first of two free throws, but missed the second. Theresa Griffin grabbed the rebound and fired a pass to Penza who knocked down a corner jump shot to cut the lead to 21-18. However, another drought ensued for the 'Canes that would even tually take them out of the game. Yurs canned a 14-footer with 1:40 remaining in the third segment to pad the advantage to 23-18 entering the final quarter. Marian's next points didn't appear until 4:35 remained in the game when Penza hit a breakaway lay up. By then the Rockets had built a 29-20 lead and coasted the rest of the way. In the lower photo, Barry is busy constructing a fly he will use while fishing. He uses every kind of material imaginable when he is busy fly tying. By Mike Lamb Plaindealer sports editor SPRING GROVE - Imagine this scenerio. You are wading down a stream during the hatching of the imayfly. Trout, bigger than you have ever dreamed of, jump out of the water, snapping at the hatching may flies. The sound of the snapping fish echo so loud, a cold chill runs through your body. Hie sound has you scared, but excited. Hie scenerio isn't a fisherman dreaming. It actually happened to Kevin Barry on a fishing trip to upper Michigan. His fly rod and he have been experiencing fishing expeditions like the one in Michigan for 25-years. His success in fly casting can be measured by two records he holds. One for a 20-pound plus stripe bass and the other for a 20-pound plus blue Fish. Both are record catches off a fly-rod in salt water. Both catches were caught off the Cape Cod in 1970 in 1970 near Falmouth, Massachusetts. There are many ways to fish, but fly casting is the only way for Barry. He has been fishing with the fly rod since he was seven-years-old. He says he is "re-pioneering fly fishing. "It's a lot more fun," said Barry. "I find it closer to man and his environment and the fish. It's you and the fish. "It's much more adaptable than any other fishing technique. You are able to imitate a wider range of natural fish foods." Barry not only fishes with a fly rod, but he also constructs the flies he uses as bait. He uses just about every kind of material that can be possibly used, and his large collection imitates just about every kind of insect there could be. "Hiere are so many man- made materials that can be used today. Feathers, hair, yarn,. . . In the 50's and 60's, people would pay outrageous prices for certain materials. But, now, the cost has dropped tremen dously," said Barry. "It's an arts and crafts situation. It can be learned quite readily, even from a seven-year-old." Barry caught his two record fish on consecutive days with a fly that consisted of a yellow feather off the back of a hen. An avid outdoorsman, Barry lived most of his life in the northeastern part of the United States of Maine and Rhode Island. He moved to Illinois seven years ago, and now lives in Spring Grove. He canoe's, bird hunts, and used to do quite a bit of deer hunting. But, of course, fly fishing is his first love. No matter where he goes fishing, fly casting is the method he uses. "I've done a lo^of work with trout. But I have also caught bass, Atlantic salmon, land locked salmon, pan fish and northern pike," he said. But he also added fly fishing is the most "productive in poundage and length" when trout fishing. Barry contends fly casting can be done anywhere, except for fishing that reaches 20-to-25 feet in depth. "Out here in Lake Michigan, the fish are so deep, it's not practical to fish." In this area, Barry fishes on Bangs Lake and Diamond Lake, and he goes up to Wisconsin quite a bit. He takes quite a few trips to different places in the United States.
