IN THE FAST LANE -- "SpeedWorld" might sound like a drug-shooting gallery in an inner-city empty apartment house, but not to worry! NBC's "Speedworld" is an anthology series devoted to the events and personalities that make up motor sports racing, from Indy cars to unlimited hydroplane to sprint cars and stadium supercross AH make up one of the nation's most popular spec­ tator sports. The programming consists of three shows to be telecast Saturdays. March 24. March 31 and April 8. and will be hosted by NBC's Sports' motor-rac­ ing expert Paul Page, the radio voice of the Indian­ apolis 500 Helping Paul will be Olympic hero-turned-auto racer Bruce Jenner, three-time Indianapolis winner Johnny Rutherford, and veteran motor sports announcer/writer Gary Gerould. "The success of motor sports on television indi­ cates that there is tremendous interest in the races and the personalities involved," says NBC sports VP Sean McManus "We are targeting that audi­ ence. and hopefully an all-encompassing show of this sort will provide a common thread and attract fans from every aspect of auto racmq " The shows will include race coverage and timely features, previews and reports on Indy cars, Formu­ la I, NASCAR, hydroplanes, dragsters, sprint cars, supercross and flat-track motorcycles. Some of the "SpeedWorld" events scheduled are the Long Beach (Calif.) Grand Prix; the Unlimited Hydroplane World Championships from Clear Lake.
