But to Duane Sperry and and 160 youths from, all over the county, the Tumble Weeds has a very special meaning. It's an unique and special organization in the county wjhich time and sweat turns into success for the organization and the youths.. To Sperry, the Tumble Weeds iff lsomething he has pioneered into one of the more respected power tumbling organizations. Not only in the state, but maybe in the country. He's working on the world. "Someday we will have somebody compete in ternationally. I would also like to coach a USTA team (United States Tumbling Association) someday," said Sperry. Power tumbling is not one of most publicized sports next to basketball and football, but in Europe and in the state of Illinois power tumbling is more than respected. It is also a sport the United States has its share of success. At his studio, Sperry had his video recorder playing a tape of an international meet, in which several atheletes from Rockford taking the top places. "Mark, my words, we will be there someday." Making it internationally would be* quite a step for the Tumble Weeds, considering seven years ago there wasn't such a organization. In fact, tumbling was just something Sperry just fooled around with on his spare time. Most of training came on the job and seeking information from dif ferent authorities. Fate and Sperry locked hands when he was hired to teach tumbling to 15 youths at a local dance studio. It wasn't long his students out-grew the dance studio and had to take their act to local school gymnasiums. They had to lug equipment where ever they went.. Growth continued, and Sperry purchased a small building just ,,S © « carton Rebate a carton Rebate JMm _ mm C > ; v Plaindealer photos by Mike Lamb McHenry County Tumble Weed head coach Duane Sperry gives all of his students a helping hand in completing their routine until mastering it. Here is where Sperry has made his stand teaching youth's as young as seven-years-old to gracefully tumble down a long mat. "Power tumbling is the sport of the future," Sperry said. "They can compete in all dif ferent age levels. They can start as young as four-years-old. They can come to this class, and in two weeks I can put them into competition." Sperry should now, he has already had his share of success in competition. Three of his pupils qualified for the North American Trampoline In- vitationals in Montreal and five are going to Las Vegas for the United States Aero Gymnastic Federation Nationals. Duane's son Patrick, along with Karly Kunzer and Steve Crooks are going to Canada after qualifying at a regional meet held at McHenry's Parkland Junior High School. Kunzer, Sperry, Ladonna Parvin, Mellie Beigh and Mike McGowan are Las Vegas bound. Parvin was already a national champion, and is now one of six coaches for the Tumble Weeds. "The parents really love it," added Sperry. "It really helps these kids socially and its helps their self-confidence. It's really a boost for them. Irregardless how good a tumbler they become, they get something out of it." But in a town where baseball; is the only sport in the minds of many, and soccer is making its presence known, why spend time tumbling? "I think its fantastic. It teaches him discipline. It teaches him to work," said the father of Steve Crook. The elder Crook, Donald, likes the in dividuality of the sport. "It's judged as an individual sport. Size means nothing. You can work as hard and be as good as you want to be. "The meets are fantastic and the kids enjoy it." Sperry's prize student, Parvin, has her reasons on sticking with the sport. She started as a 12-year-oldf and is now 20-years old. She is a national champion of a year ago. "I've had a lot of fun. It's challenging," said Parvin, who wants to continue coaching. "Tumbling is very safe with very few injuries. You might suffer a broken finger or a sprained ankle. Anything else would be a freak accident. It's one of the softest sports I know," Sperry said. Sperry runs the Tumble Weeds with his wife, Mary. Their studio stands in back of their house off route 31. Sperry's hard work goes even farther than his own Tumble Weeds. He is currently a regional chairman of the United States Tumbling Trampoline Association. "I'll take as many kids as I have coaches for. So far I've been lucky to find enough coaches. I just work with the advanced kids now," said Sperrv Advanced is where Sperry believes his Tumble Weeds is heading. His two main goals is to get several of his students on the United States Tumbling Trampoline Association team that competes internationally. And he also wants to coach the ' USTA someday. Just ask Sperry if his goals will come true. "I know it will happen." IS m, i ** % : -V' -- SPORT FANS...
