DEDUCTION Illinois home owners for the first time this year may deduct on their 1983 state income tax return property taxes (real estate taxes) paid during the tax year. Farmers produce what consumers indicate they want, observed Robert Hughes, Woodstock farmer, during a free-wheeling discussion at McHenry County's 1984 Agriculture Day observance last week. '•If farmers believe they can raise a crop, feed livestock or milk cows at a profitable level, they will produce that food," said Hughes. "In the United States, the consumer is boss because the consumer sets the price on what she's willing to pay. Farmers must make a profit to stay in business, and so they must figure their costs of production and anticipated income. Federal government programs mess up this free market situation, as the dairy problem indicates." Hughes gave an example: If cattle are $70, farmers might figure they should feed cattle, but if the price drops to a level where it is unprofitable to feed cattle, consumers are saying they don't want to pay the price needed to encourage production. David Gardner, Solon Mills dairy farmer, said the new national dairy program won't reduce the supply of milk substantially. "We checked it out and tried to participate in our farm but it didn't make sense to take part. Our herd is set and what would happen after 15 months when the program is supposed to end?" Charles Weingart, McHenry dairyman, added the management of livestock to produce heifers and develop a herd requires many months and 84BUICK HMti 1984 BUICK RIVIERA 1984'S IMMEDIATE DELIVERY J 11 H M 1 J > j H • SALE SAVE ..>2000 •LeSabres *Centurys •Regals *Skyhawks •Skylarks IMMEDIATE DELIVERY WHOLESALE SPECIALS £ LOW PRICES HONORED THURSDAY, FRIDAY & SATURDAY SAVES! "you can't turn milk production off and on like a faucet". Most dairymen have ignored the program nationally. Hie cut back in supplies will be far less than the USDA projected as its minimum desired reduction. Elmer Hill, Union farmer, told news people the price support will decline further as the program progresses, and meanwhile the government is deducting 50 cents a hundred from each farmer's production to pay for part of the price support program Congress passed last year. "It's a mess," he agreed. Hughes and several others indicated the only solution is drastically reduced price support. "Make it unprofitable and the agile farmer will look for alternate choices," he said. Two bright stories concerning agriculture were discussed. Bruce Olbrich, Harvard livestock farmer, pointed out farmers' increased willingness to provide funds to promote products. He cited the number of checkoff programs where farmers voluntarily contribute to a fund administered by far mers to promote products. Studying the potential for exports - one of the main hopes for improved prices paid far mers since a quarter of the feed grains production is geared to overseas sales - Clifford Ganschow recalled the chain of events that had depressed ex port sales. *150/000 OPEN HOUSE. ONE COULD BE YOU! A Ganschow, chairman of the international agricultural company, Doane-Western, said the four circumstances were the bad world economy, the strongest U.S. dollar in several decades, the abnormally good weather worldwide, and the Carter embargo in 1980 which continues to damage U.S. export business because many nations found other sources for their grains. Ganschow anticipates exports will improve in 1984 and he said the United States is in a strategic position to produce food because U.S. farmers have a significant competitive ad vantage. That advantage includes efficiency in use of equipment, better climate, improved soil, and the ingenuity to adapt to the changing market. Biggest question, the panelists agreed, concerns the federal deficit and the impact this will have on interest rates, the dollar value in relation to foreign currency, and the damage to exports that the current squabble between Congress and the President is causing. "Only bigger question", summarized Tom Nichols, Hebron grain farmer, "is the weather we'll have for the growing season. Another drought, or excess rain, could affect prices paid farmers even more than what the government might or not do in relation to the deficit and the 1985 farm bill."
