Launch Phase III of cardiac rehabilitation SECTION 2 - PAGE 11 - PLA1NDEALER - WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4, 1964 Northern Illinois Medical Center (McHenry Hospital) launched Phase III of its Car diac Rehabilitation program at the Lake Region YMCA in Crystal Lake. Kathleen Spyrnal, RN, MSN, coordinator of cardiac rehabilitation for the hospital, said, "Phase HI is an outpatient maintenance program for persons who have reached a particular stage of recovery following heart surgery, a cardiac "event", or who are at high risk to have a heart attack. Through carefully planned exercise, a person in Phase in can resume an active, normal lifestyle." Northern Illinois Medical Center opened its cardiac rehabilitation , program in February, 1983, and has had 124 participants in the program thus far. , Participants in all three phase of the cardiac program must be referred by their physician, and are placed in the phase most appropiate to their ntfeds. The initial stage is for the hospitalized patient, an in patient program which com bines individualized education and counseling with progressive graded activity. The entire health care team, including patient, family, attending physician, cardiac rehabiHtaion nurses, nutritional services, and the pharmacy, are involved in the program. In Phase n, the outpatient follows a 12-week program of exercise and education held three times a week. The par ticipant's progress is supervised by program medical advisors and staff, and all exercise is monitored by telemetry. Sessions include use of exericse bicycles, a treadmill and a rowing machine. Phase III is community- based, such as at the YMCA, and the particpant attends three times a week. Cardiac nurses are present to supervize the program, which includes exercise and a walking-jogging program. Monitoring equip ment, and a "crash cart" always are available. The Phase in program will be offered at the YMCA Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 6 to 7:30 a.m. For information on any of the cardiac rehabilitation services available through Northern Illinois Medical Center, call 385-2200, extension 707. general m ycuciai News Gibson recognized for superior duty John Lic&stro, center, checks his pulse rate with Kathy Spyrnal, RN, MSN, coordinator of the NIMC cardiac rehabilitation program.
