Little experience slows McHenry track teams Letterwinners V to anchor ladies team . 1 . , • Life od the track won't be any easier for the McHenry girls track team, than it is for the boys. For the second straight season, the girls will be coached along with the boys by Dan Boland under a combined coaching system. Boland will only have five returning let terwinners to anchor the team. But he does have a big turnout, like the boys, with 35 candidates to work with. "We have a huge group of underclassmen out," said assistant coach Earl Kyle. "The girls will have to come a long way again, with little ex perience at this point.*' Delia Saunders, Vicki Senn and Tracy Brechel are the returning seniors, while Pam Bradley and Alleen are the returning juniors. Saunders will definitely be a plus for the Warrior squad. She is the defending Fox Valley Conference champion in the 3,200 meter. She also took a second in the 1,600 meter run at the FVC meet last spring. Bradley is a cross country veteran along with Saunders, and should help out in the distant events. Brechel is a returning sprinter for the Warriors and placed fifth in last springs FVC meet in the 200-yard dash. Senn was fifth in the long jump, and is expected to lead the field events. Kyle is looking for the un derclassmen to fill in many of the varsity spots. "You can't win conference with six-eight people. You have to get people with fifth's or sixth's. That's what were hoping out of our underclassmen. But that remains to be seen, .r With 1983 FVC champion . Crown now merged witty Dun dee, Kyle looks for the Chargers to be the top contender for the title. "Dundee-Crown has to be figured in. Cary-Grove has a good program and Woodstock is always tough," PAGE2I^PLAlNpEALER - FRIDAY, APRIL «, IW4 Brian Wright, one of the Warriors' returning letterwinners will continue the rivalry with Crystal Lake Central in the distance events. Last spring during the Fox Valley Conference meet, Saun ders had no trouble claiming the 3,200 meter crown. By Mike Lamb Plaindealer sports editor There is good news and bad news as far as the McHenry boys' track team is concerned. The good news is a turnout of 40 candidates for varsity positions is larger than in past springs. The bad news is varsity ex perience is a lean commodity among coach DanHBoland's squad. on Boland> has sevearieturMng- letterwinners back foc' the up coming season. Brian Wright, Marty Koleno, Matt Adams, Dave Suchomski and Todd Hughes are seniors. Chris Creutz and Mike Lopinsky are juniors. "These kids were just fresh men and sophomores on the team when we won conference (1982) and were the weak link. This year they will be carrying the load," said Boland's assistant coach. Earl Kyle. "They are very competitive. They will have to look towards the few upperclassmen we have for leadership," Kyle added. According to Kyle, the squad is fortunate the returning ex perience is spread among the different events. Another hindering factor is the inability to get outside the past couple weeks. Kyle is certain this will hurt in the early meets such as Thursday's contest with Johnsburg and Saturday's Crystal Lake Central indoor Invitational. "It will take us awhile to get in running shape," Kyle said. "It's important with a young group of kids to bring them up slowly for confidence in their ability. It all depends how fast they develop." The distance events might be the Warriors* strongest area. Wright, Koleno and Creutz were all members of last fall's state qualifying Warrior cross -4eM^bdtea^^dded;.U) that group is ferry Harth, also a member of that harrier squad: Creutz took a thirds in both the 3,200 and 1,600 meter runs in the Fox Valley Conference meet last spring. The sprinters will be led by senior Jim Shaver. He has the most experience of the three. He was a member of the 800 meter relay team that captured first in the FVC meet last season. Both Suchomski and Adams will help out in the sprints. Juniors Mark Etheridge and Brian Smith will be the top candidates for the hurdles and jumping events. Both Kyle and Boland are looking for a good season out of Lopinsky in the shot and discus. Lopinsky was third in the FVC meet last spring in the discus with a heave of 129-7. Matt Adams will fill in at the long jump and triple jump. Another plus for this year's squad is the coaching addition of Bob Ludwigsen. One of his duties will be coaching pole vaulters, something McHenry went without last spring. A repeat of second place in the FVC might be difficult for the Warriors this season. Both Kyle and Boland would like to see the Warrior squad finish in the top half of the conference. As in the past, Kyle looks to Crystal Lake Central to be the top contender. ,, "Crystal Lake Central is the odds on favored to win the conference. They have the most kids returning. Barring injuries, they should be in a strong position. After that, it's very competitive."
