( Series focus on women and alcohol The ongoing free community education series sponsored by the Northern Illinois Council On Alcoholism and community service organizations is featuring Janis Bloom, NICA prevention specialist, ad­ dressing the subject, Women and Alcohol, at Grant Com­ munity High School Theatre at 7 pm. Friday, April 13. A film, The Last To Know, will be shown plus a discussion by Ms. Bloom explaining changing roles, conflicting messages, sociali influences, protection and denial. She will tell the progression of women and alcohol and how it is different than in men. Grant Community High School is located at 285 E. Grand Avenue, Fox Lake. On Saturday, April 7, the fifth and sixth grade Sunday School class of St. John's Lutheran Church, Island Lake, will be co- sponsoring the recycling drive with the McHenry County Defenders. The drive will be held in the parking lot of McHenry Community High School West Campus, 4724 West Crystal Lake Road, McHenry. Workers will be there from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to receive recyclables. The Sunday School class plans to use its share of the proceeds, according to Mrs. David Brough, Sunday School teacher, to purchase tickets to the Passion Play at Zion. Should there be any excess, they will contribute it to their Sunday School Mission project. Another drive at which only glass and aluminum cans are accepted takes place on the second Thursday of each month (April 12), in the rear parking of "s McHenry FS (4004 West Elm, j McHenry) from 9 a.m. to noon. ! Entrance to the area is made via \ Borden Street. At this drive the j public will be paid the usual* prices for 100 percent aluminum cans and 1 cent per pound for glass. Math team scores well The Marian Central Catholic High School Math Team com­ peted in the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) contest at Rock Valley College, Rockford, in March. The following students from Marian Central will advance to the state finals at Illinois State University at Bloomington May 12: Ed Belmonte, Woodstock; Lilan Berry, Marengo; Bill Darling, Huntley; Marcia Kim, Hebron; Pat O'Leary, Wood­ stock; and Laura Ryan, Union, who took first place in the written geometry competition. All of these students are sophomores. Jim Peschke, Woodstock, a senior, took first place in the pre-calculus written competition. Yun Kim, Wood­ stock, a junior, took second place in the Algebra II written competition. Other Marian Central teams winning awards were: the Algebra II written competition team of John Ashley, Wood­ stock; Lisle Garrett, Wood­ stock; Won Son Han, Wood­ stock; Craig Kunz, McHenry; and Andrea Leslie, Woodstock, juniors took second place. The pre-calculus written competition team of Marian Asfeld, Woodstock; Andy Belmonte, Woodstock; Vicki Fabbri, Woodstock; Dave Gaffaney, Lake-in-the-Hills; Jim Peschke, Woodstock; and Kim Schuler, Wonder Lake, all of whom are seniors, took second place. The calculator team of Bill Dowling, sophomore, .Wood­ stock; John Ashley, junior, Woodstock; Marian Asfeld, senior, Woodstock; and Kim Schuler, senior, Wonder Lake, took second place. The junior-senior eight-person team of Mike Baker, Wood­ stock; Craig Kunz, McHenry; Mike Siciliano, Crystal Lake; Joe Sullivan, Woodstock; Marian Asfeld, Woodstock; Vicki Fabbri, Woodstock; Dave Gaffaney, Lake-in-the-Hills; and Jim Peschke, Woodstock, took second place.
