NMCfwOl Sandy Qabriel, who plays Edna Thornton on "Al My Children," has recently returned to the show after a brief absence. "I'd bean playing Edna for three years when I realized I wanted to do a sitcom." says Miss Qabriel. "I moved to California and auditioned for several things when I began to wonder what I'd do if I got a part," she continues. "It was then that I realized ycx .̂ can't have everything -- a family that's based on the East Coast and a career that's based on the West Coast. Working on a soap is the only reasonable, sane way to have what I wanted. "The original Edna wasn't supposed to have any oomedic qualities. She was supposed to be a vtdai- ness." says Miss Qabriel. "But after you play that about a week you get tired of straight villainy and you have to add some humor to the part. "Portraying someone like Edna you get to do all the things you would never dream of doing in real life. For instance, I'd never yell at someone if they were to push me around in a department store -- but Edna definitely would! "It's fun to get the hostili­ ties out. Edna says what­ ever comes out of her mouth -- it just pops out. She's lost the censoring valve in her brain, while my Sandy Gabriel oVfh overtunctions." laughs Miss Qabriel. "The fans have been very sweet," she continues. "They aren't nasty to me. Even though Edna does bad things, she forgets them in the next second. She doesn't take herself very seriously, and thus I don't think the audience takes her seriously either. "In the future, I'd like to see Edna have a love rela­ tionship with Chuck (Rich­ ard Van Vleet). I think his adjustment to Edna is very comedic and Richard has , never had a chance to be ' funny on the show. He's always been a straight leading man. I think there I could be love and at the same time humor between the two characters," con­ cludes Miss Gabriel Miss Gabriel is married to actor John Gabriel, who portrays Seneca Beaulac on "Ryan's Hope ". Between tapings on "AMC," the Gabriels are at work on a pilot called "The John and Sandy Show "
