Goodell was elected chairman of the Eleventh District Business and Professional Women's club at Dr. Denver Sasser will con­ duct the first in a series of Creative Writing Workshops at McHenry County College in the Student Lounge April 12, at 8 p.m. The first workshop will consist of a group of progressive exercises culminating in a complete poem. The practical exercises will then be reinforced with theory. Sasser has taught creative writing at the University of San Diego, The University of California at Riverside, andv Oklahoma State University. He „ has been awarded fellowships at Yale University for playwriting and television writing. He has won several awards for his poetry in addition to being published in many journals and magazines including America Sings, The Spoon River Quar­ terly, and Livewire Magazine. Writers Anon, the writers club at McHenry County College, is sponsoring the workshop and encourages all poets and writers in the area to attend. wice the annual meeting held in Elgin. Mrs. Goodell who is the vice-president of the county club and district officer, has been chosen from the membership of the McHenry County club which was organized four years ago. Mrs. Goodell and Miss Ethel Jones were among the delegates from McHenry County who attended the Business and Professional Women's club Eleventh District tea held in the parlors of the YWCA at Elgin. . A successful card party was sponsored by members of the altar and Rosary Sodality for the benefit of St. Patrick's church. Ten tables of cards were in play and prises in bridge were awarded to Mr. and Mrs. William Tonyan, in five-hundred to Mr. and Mrs. John Bolger, in pinochle to Mrs. E.R. Sutton and in euchre to Donald Givens. ,. These two teachers are Mrs. Earl Tischler, better known to her pupils of last year as Miss Janet Donlan, and Miss Lucia Rose Rausch. Mrs. and Mrs. Ralph Bennett are the parents of a son born at the Woodstock hospital. They have two other children, Ralph Jr., and Zelinda Anne. Lieut. L.A. Blomgren is en­ joying a leave at his home here. He has been transferred from Norfolk, Va., to Brooklyn, New York. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 14, 1959) Mis Colleen J. Ward, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Ward of McHenry, has won the silver wings of a United Air Lines stewardess. After four and a half weeks at the stewardess training school in Cheyenne, Wyo., she now serves aboard mainliners flying in and out of Chicago. Miss Ward is a graduate of Chicago Aquinas High School and Marquette University, where she was president of the Inter-Resident Hall council, student senate, and of Kappa Beta Gamma and Beta Gamma Sigma. On Monday, May 4, an im­ pressive program will mark the dedication of McHenry's new post office building at 104 S. Green street. The netir structure is a part of the Post Office Department's commercial program, which uses private financing to obtain needed facilities. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 17, 1974) James S. Tonyan was elected to the board of High Sphool District 156 through a write-in vote. But Tonyan found out Only after a telephone call from part way around the world in the early hours of Monday morning. The young McHenry high school graduate, touring several countries on a vacation trip with his sister, Audrey, and her husband, Capt. John Regner, made the call from Portugal. His sleepy parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Sulvester Tonyan, received the message at 12:30 McHenry time the morning of April 15. tonyan was elected along with Philip Bartmann to serve three- year terms. Bartmann, the only name on the ballot, polled 479 votes to 286 for Tonyan. Two males robbed the Ken­ tucky Fried Chicken restaurant at 4503 W. Route 120, McHenry about 11:10 p.rh. The men, ar­ med with blue keel hand guns, escaped with $696 in cash and a $40 personal check. They were last seen fleeing throught the rear door of the restaurant* south through the parking lot.
