Poppy Day will be observed Saturday May 19, in Wonder Lake, according to Jean Lucarz, Poppy chairlady of Robert Vanderstraeten Unit 1169. The birght red memorial poppy will be offered to the public at that time by Legion and auxiliary volunteers. They hope that every citizen will wear a poppy as a tribute to those who died or who continue to suffer the ills of war to keep America a free nation. The poppies are made by disabled veterans in Illinois veterans hospitals. The veterans derive therapy as well as in come from assembling the small red flower. Profits from the donations received on Poppy Day are used 100 percent for the relief and aid of service men and women and their families, through a variety of children and youth, and veterans affairs and rehabilitation programs. Mental retardation remains major medical problem Mentally retardation crosses lines of race, religion, and nationality. It knows no educational, social or economic limits. Mental retardation is nine times more prevalent than cerebral palsy and four times more common than rheumatic heart disease. It affects 15 times as many people as total blind ness. "In fact, one out of every 10 Americans has a mentally retarded person in his or her family," according to Carol Weisbruch, Community Education and Prevention coordinator at Pioneer Center. Mental retardation can be caused by any condition that hinders or r interferes with development before birth, during birth, or in early childhood years. Its long lasting impact during a person's developing years places it among other ^developmental disabilities". More than 200 causes for mental retardation have been identified but this only accounts for approximately 25 percent of the cases. Fortunately, progress is being made in preventing mental retardation. At least 50 percent of mental retardation can be prevented. Key to prevention, however, is education. Education about what mental retardation is and what causes it, provides steps to prevent developmental disabilities. Known causes of mental retardation are diseases and infections such as: rubella (German measles) in the mother during the first three months of pregnancy, m e n i n g i t i s , s y p h i l i s , toxoplasnosis. Rh-faptor in compatibility between mother and infant, lead poisoning in young children, malnutrition, and chromosone abnormalities also may cause mental retar dation. Among the most com mon of the latter is Down's syndrome (mongolism), which occurs in one out of 600 babies born and usually results in moderate to severe disabilities. The risk of having a Down's syndrome baby is higher in women over &5 years of age. Drinking, smoking, or drug use during pregnancy can also cause mental retardation. Age can also be a factor in another direction when having a child. Teenagers who get pregnant tend to have low birth weight and premature babies.
