PAGE 1&- PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, APRIL 13, 1984 oports 26 Skyhawks to play on spring tennis team r Freshman 5-0 start a product of tennis program One look at McHenry's Matt Roy, and you can see an example of coach Gary Gray's tennis program. Roy is only a freshman member of the Warrior tennis team this spring, but already he is contributing to the varsity . Roy, isn't the only freshman contributing, but thus far he has been one of the more successful. Last Saturday he was the only Warrior champion in a quadrangular held at the West Campus tennis courts. He defeated his number four singles Rockford-Boyland opponent 7-3, and then defeated a player from Leyden 6-4. His success continued Monday by winning his match against Grant at number three singles, 6-3, 6-0. He is now 5-0 on the season. "He's just like all the other kids," said Gray on Roy and the other freshmen and sophomores. "They're all young and enthusiastic and coachable. Everything I say about him (Roy), I have to say about everyone else. "Matt has been in the summer program since fifth grade." Before the season started, Roy had no idea how he would fit in » sPH' By Barb Ansell Plaindealer sports writer The Skyhawks mens' tennis team proved to be a dominant force in last year's Northwest Suburban Conference race by finishing second. This year the team has the strength of five returning varsity players and the depth of 17 freshmen and sophomores. Totaled up, the Johnsburg tennis squad membership reached 26 players for the 1984 season. "With this many kids out for the team, it creates healthy internal competition which is good," said Skyhawk coach Denny Spraetz. "I think this shows that more people in the community are becoming in terested in tennis. It also helps to carry on the program when you have so many freshmen and sophomores who will eventually move up and carry the team when they become juniors and seniors." Returning to the command of the nets are seniors Paul Hendrixson, Sean Clark and Jason Anderson. The returning juniors include Jim Owen and Ray Tantillo. While the junior varsity players will be playing both singles and doubles, the top spots have shown the skill levels of those filling the spaces. At number one singles, Paul Hendrixson is in charge. "Hendrixson's varsity ex perience is apparent in looking back at his undefeated con ference record in the number two singles position last year," said Spraetz. "I think Hen drixson can do as well this year in the conference, especially now that his game has become more consistent. His toughest match will be against Scott Hayes of Round Lake though." i The number two singles spot is held by Clark. "Clark has im proved more than any other player on the team," said Spraetz. "He has made drastic im provements over the winter to increase the pace of his serve and to have a higher percentage of good first serves. His im provements and varsity ex perience will make him a very strong and competitive player." Clark and Hendrixson will have other jobs too. "We will be looking to Sean and Paul to provide leadership both on and off the court," said Spraetz. "They will be the ones, on an informal level, to set the tone for the team. Their degree of competitiveness should rub off and help the whole team. When the other players see these guys working hard and not giving up, it will make the difference in how the rest of the team plays. p In terms of team goals, Spraetz said, "I'd like to see us finish in the top half of the conference and be able to send one or more of the players to the state tournament. "At the same time, I hope every kid who comes out for the team has a good time and learns about the sport and is anxious ' about the next season." In the first match against Woodstock, it was Hendrixson and Clark who provided the team with their first victories,d despite a team loss. The Skyhawks will take on Cary-Grove today. Matt Roy ATHLETE of the week on Gray's squad. Now that he has so far earned a spot on the varsity, he has a few goals. "I would like to go down state, but that's pretty far away." Roy is hoping the team does well also. "With the inex perience, I don't think we will finish too high, but we will give it our best shot. Roy is the son of Bill and Lynne Roy. Beck finds track depth in large squad It's a game of numbers for the Johnsburg boys' track team. This season the Skyhawks will carry an army of 38 members, the largest group in three years for coach Ben Beck to work with. "It gives us a lot of depth we haven't had before," said Beck. "Still, we're not as deep as we need to be in order to effectively compete against the top schools in the conference. The con ference strength still seems to be in the hands of Marengo and Lake Zurich. "Numbers make it tough. Harker will be looked upon to provide strength in the 400 meter dash. Dschida, who let tered as a sophomore, did not compete last year. He will participate in the 110 high hurdles, the 300 low hurdles and the one and two mile relays. Bjerning is a name new to the Skyhawk lineup. However, he is not new to track. Bjerning is a transfer * student from Wisconsin, where he lettered in track and will be a member of the one and two mile relay teams and run the 800 meter run. Another athlete returning to the Skyhawk lineup is Rokosz, who has returned from a year as a foreign exchange student in South America. "Rokosz is probably one of our best athletes," said Beck. "And along with running in the 800 meter dash, the half mile and the one and two mile relays, we can count on putting him anywhere else we might need him. We know he can do the job for us," Lawrence, a junior, will concentrate on the half mile and the mile. Other athletes Beck hopes to see heading the list of top per formers includes junior Ron Beck in the triple jump and the 100 and 200 meter sprints. Along with sophomores Bill Dust in the high hurdles, the 400 yard dash, and the two mile run. Bill Meyer, a transfer student from conference oDDonent Lake Zurich, will also help out in the high and low hurdles and the 200 meter dash. "Meyer is probably one of our best recruits," Beck said. "We've fallen behind in our distance and field events training," said Beck. "Like everyone else, the poor spring weather has forced us to con dition indoors and makes it hard for the athletes to settle into their positions. "Once the weather breaks and we get outside regularly, we'll be able to decide where everyone will work the best. Right now it's still too early to tell." 12 inch meeting The Men's 12 inch softball organizational meeting will be held next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the City Hall Chambers.
