PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, APRIL i3, 1984 general News Census on child support, alimony planned in this area The U.S. Bureau of the Census will conduct its regular survey on employment and unem ployment in this area during the week of April 16-21, according to Stanley D. Moore, director of the Bureau's Regional office in Chicago. In addition to the usual questions on employment and unemployment the April survey will have questions on child support and alimony. The survey is conducted for the U.S. Department of labor in a scientifically designed sample of approximately 71,000 households throughout the United States. Employment and unemployment statistics based on results of this survey are used to provide a continuing measure of the economic health of the nation. For example, in February, 1984, the survey indicated that of the 112.7 million men and women in the civilian labor force, 103.9 million were em ployed. The nation's unem ployment rate was 7.8 percent, 0.2 percent lower than reported in January. * Information supplied by in dividuals participating in the survey is kept strictly con fidential by law T>. According to James Shearl, manager of Illinois Crop Improvement Association, farmers waiting for warmer temperatures can look forward to better seed ger mination and more uniform stands. Testing indicates 1983 seed was stressed due to drought conditions during the pod fill stage. Shearl says warm tests show a high germination rate of 91 percent, while cold test results of 50 percent indicate stressed seed may not perform will in cold, damp conditions. However, disease tests place the occurrence of pod and stem blight at about .46 percent. Farmers can take several precautions to allow for good field results in 1984. Careful handling of seed can prevent mechanical injury to seed before planting. Farmers should avoid planting too deep by setting planters or seed drills at Ivfe to 2-inch depths. Also, seed with fugicide protectants will fare better in no-till or other adverse seed bed conditions. Planting Illinois certified seed also has an advantage. Nineteen years of Illinois 5- acre soybean yield contests proved certified seed outyielded noncertified seed by two and a half bushels an acre. farmers who have not pruchased seed for 1984 should not be frightened about the availability of soybean seed. But they should realize that supplies of popular varieties are very low. They are urged to contact their local certified seed dealer today to find out which varieties are still available. Orient tour is planned for June Local residents are invited to participate in a tour of the Orient this summer under the administration of McHenry County College instructor, David Elder, and Hoffman Estates High instructor Linda Lakin. Both Elder and Ms. Lakin are seasoned tour leaders. The 1984 Orient program entitled, "Japan and the Three Faces of China," will be their sixth tour abroad. The group of participants from the Northwest Suburban area will begin their 17-day cultural exploration of the Orient June 16. The itinerary includes Tokyo, Kyoto, Taipei, Guangzhou in the Peoples Republic of China, and Hong Kong. On the return flight to the states, travelers may elect a four-night Hawaiian option. Enrollment in the tour has already begun and local residents are urged to complete application for the Orient tour by the end of April. Brochures, travel ap plications, optional college credit and further information on the tour may be obtained by calling Elder at (815) 455-3700 extension 215 or Lakin at (312) 882-8000, extension 74. i BUNK BED CAPITAL of NORTHERN ILLINOIS FEATURES: Solid 2x6 pine construction, bolt on rails, ladder.
