PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. APRIL 18. HU4 general yci ICI a i News Historic chapter closes at the Plaindealer Crime of the week This week Crime Stoppers is seeking information on two daytime burglaries that oc curred in Crystal Lake on Friday, Jan. 27, 1984. On that day, between 7:30 a m. and 6:30 p.m., a burglar entered an apartment building 459-4800 located in the 300 block of Pierson St. The suspect then forced open the doors of two apartments. In each apartment, the burglar made a search for items of value. Losses exceed several thousands of dollars. Included in the stolen items were the following: two 35mm cameras (Ricoh and Yashica brands), five camera lenses and an electronic flash; an Oneida sterling silver set, and several articles of jewelry. Police investigators are still seeking information about the person or persons responsible for the burglaries. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards of up to $1,000 for in formation leading to the arrest and filing of criminal charges against offenders. If you have any information about these two burglaries to apartments on Pierson Street in Crystal Lake, or information about any other crimes, call Crime Stoppers at 815-45^4800. All Crimes Stoppers callers remain anonymous. You never have to give your name. Crime Stoppers, which is sponsored by the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce, assigns secret numbers to anonymous callers who provide in formation. Callers are in structed to call back at regular intervals to find out if any suspects have been arrested as a result of confidential in formation given. Talk about historic dates. Last Friday was a memorable one in the long history of the McHenry Palindealer. Editor Adele (Brenda to me) Froehlich wound up 42 plus years with the paper. Everybody was happy with memories of association with the ever-considerate gal in charge. I am sure there was a certain amount of sadness hidden below the surface. We could only wish her the happiness she deserves in retirement. _ When Adele came along, she gave the paper a big lift and has been a loyal, dedicated em ployee throughout the years. Before paste-up days, printers ink messed up the shop room. Adele would put on a big apron, get her hands covered with ink and make up the entire front page. We had fun days. At one time I tried singing "She's The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi" as I entered the editorial room, but gave up when she failed to invite me to join her choral club. It's a long count, but Adele, Marie Yegge and S.I.H. have a combined total of nearly 125 years of service to "Ye Olde" Plaindealer. I have seen many changes in the Plaindealer force over the years. People moved on to other points. I missed them greatly. Now the changes are bunching up. Marie put in 32 years as proof reader deluxe, assistant sports editor and spelling teacher for Dick Rabbitt and S.I.H. In semi-retirement, she was the picker-outer of interesting items for Twice Told Tales, Now she is in full retirement. Millie has retired. So has Jo Ann Hutchinson and "Little Helen", typesetters. Wayne Gaylord, whom I referred to as our "ace photographer", is no longer here to join me in the ups and downs of the White Sox. (I hear he went to see the Cubs on opening day.) These are recent changes. I couldnt possibly recall all the changes through almost half a century. Now, Donna Bertulis assumes the duties of editor. We wish her success. Readers keep me reading. Frank Rourke, Marie Oeffling and Ed Reid have been thoughtful. Now comes Richard (Nickie) Freund with a complete set of the popular Pictorial Newsletter, published by the late Arthur Stuhlfeier. Art (Minted many old time pictures, many of them from Bob Thompson's great collec tion. In reading some of the old time issues, we always find amusing items. For instance, in Jan. '39, Carolyn Justen and Ernie Freund, Mi Place proprietors, ran this ad: Half Spring Fried Chicken - 60 cents. Twice Told Tales, Dec. 25, 1941, ran this 60 year ago item: "Jac. Hetzel's Barber shop will be closed on Saturday evening next at 7 o'clock sharp, on account of neccessary ab sence at that time." This one appeared in the year 1895: "At Smith Bros, auction, sale of a car of milch cows, held at the stock yards on Monday, cows sold on an average of $31 per head." "Dear Earl: The McHenryites in Florida had their 14th McHenry Day March 31. Sixty- five faithful Floridians gathered at Fred Howard Park, Tarpon Springs, Fla. along with two guests and three new members. George and Barbara Johnson and Phil Unti were greeted by all present as new members. Ray and Florence Rothermel were selected to replace Eleanor Creutz as officers. Eleanor returned to McHenry in early March, and she will be missed by all her friends in Florida. October 27, 1984 and March 30,1985 are the dates for the next two McHenry Days. Prizes for the day were awarded to Marie Hojnacki and Rita Offerle. Other prizes were awarded to Robert Sutton, Walter Hojnacki, Sylvia Mc- Mahon, Marion Johnson, Signa Molinaire, Bill Sutton, Henrietta Ahrens, Martin Spoolstra, Eleanor Bennett and Marie Offerle. Eleanor Bennett offered a big "thank you" for the of ficers and members for their effort in making McHenry Days successful. A most pleasant afternoon was enjoyed by the entire group in conversation of times from the past. Bill Pries and Roy Homo presided during the meeting. Thanks a lot Bill & Pauline Pries" As the long standing clearing house for the large number of McHenryites in Florida, we are pleased to give you the above report. They may have sand in their shoes, but are still McHenryites. PICKUPS: The average man's idea of a good sermon: One that goes over his head and hits a neigh bor. The "voice in the wilderness" now days is likely a transistor radio. Practically any girl who knows how to cook can find a man who knows how to eat. There is something handier than a credit card. It is called money. SQUARE DEAL <4 -per carton rebate on all Solarian no-wax floor tiles!
