Inventor turns politics into new type board game PAGE 11 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. APRILltt, 1184 By Kurt Begalka Plaindealer news service Lloyd Behrens of Woodstock believes politics is nothing more than a game, so the 55-year-old man developed a board game that would make any self- respecting baby-kisser proud. Entitled "Presidential Sweepstakes," it mirrors the U.S. presidential election state by state down the campaign trail. "It's a game the way politicians play it. They promise things they won't deliver and in some cases can't deliver," Behrens said. Behrens designed the game in his spare time, entirely on his own, over the course of 6 years. The board has been made over nine separate times, the cards six or seven times, he said. Behrens hand-typed the rules, constructed playing pieces, designed money and did most of the graphics. The game and its artwork were copywrited in 1980. "I've always been a tinkerer," Behrens said. "Now I'm 99 percent satisfied." Behrens is eager to get his invention on the market with an established game company. Barring that, he plans on for ming his own company to manufacture 10,000 units to sell on his own. "There's nothing like this on MOLLY MILLIGAN Your Home Decorator © 1984 Patsy Milligan Syndicate UP AGAINST THE WALL Dear Molly Milligan: The walls of my rented apartment are in really tough shape. I realize that wallpaper is the best camouflage for cracks, lumps and rough spots, but I don't want to invest a fortune In an apartment I may vacate in a year or two. Any suggestions? Sylvia, Woodstock, IL Dear Syl: Wallpaper is nothing more than paper made to put on a wall. Almost any paper product can be pasted or laminated on a wall. 1 knew a chain-smoking professor from Toledo who saved the foil linings from his cigarette packages and papered the walls of his den with them. True, he wound up with a beautiful silver study, but soon after he wound up in a beautiful silver casket. (Lungs, you know.) The poor soul had a marvelous idea but his source of supply left a great deal to be desired. You might also consider the young woman from Manhattan who papered the walls of her powder room with humorous covers from The New Yorker magazine. Now her guests can't wait to "put a penny in the loo." Other options include old sheet music, plain brown wrap ping paper or even crinkled, colored tissue. Your possibilities are limited only by your imagination. Dear Molly Milligan: The walls of my apartment are snow-white. I'm talking stark, institutional, surgical-room white. My rental agreement states that I cannot waSpaper or paint my unit. How can I give some color to the walls of my living room without breaking my rental contract? Snow-blind, Kingston, ONT Dear Snow: Before you flake out completely, let me sug gest that you run out and buy several plywood panels. Six feet high by two and one half feet wide would be about right. Wallpaper or paint these panels and hang them (like huge pictures) approximately 18 inches apart. Treat one or more walls of your living room in this manner and you will have the look of wallpaper or paint without violating your rental agreement. Fabric stapled to panels would also work very nitftly. Add a tablecloth or slipcovered chair of the same fabric and the look is complete. Now, remove those goggles and get to work. ' > * * ' vupuiio UOIiiU.- Dear Molly Milligan: The prepasted wallpaper iu ay bedroom was hung only IS months ago and already it Is beginning to peel in the comers. What caused this and can 1 repair it without damaging the paper? All Unglued, Cincinnati, OH Dear All: The odds are that your wallpaper was not wet enough to saturate the paste completely before it was hung. Or perhaps you had a one-armed paperhanger who let the paper get too dry before hanging it. No matter. It can be repaired quite easily. First, pull paper back gently and wet. Next, apply non-wheat wallpaper paste with a brush and smooth back to the wall. Then wipe off excess paste very carefully with a clean damp sponge or wash cloth. Paste left on the front of the paper will turn yellow, look ugly and become "as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone." If you have a Question for Your Home Decorator, send it along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Molly Milligan in care of this paper. Allow four weeks for a reply. There's plenty of money and intrigue for people, Behrens said. With' more than two plaj you work as a team ~- servative Republican or Democrat, liberal Republican or Democrat, or Independent. Party affiliation is based on the roll of the dice. The winner of the previous game -- the incumbent president - has a built-in ad vantage. If you run as an In dependent, you are restricted in what you can do. As in real life, these candidates have a harder time receiving funds and gathering support. Although no political science major, Behrens acknowledged he has always had an interest in politics and a yearning to run for office. "Pve just never had the time," he said, adding some money wouldn't hurt either. However, Behrens doesn't hold with the practice of ac cepting money from political action committees or using campaign money for personal use. "I wouldn't go into it with the idea of getting richer when I came out than when I came in," he added. "I'd never forget where I started." , Will he ever run? "I wouldn't put it past me," Behrens said with a smile. general yci ICI at News i i " Airman graduates course Airman Thomas R. Payonk, son of Richard A.
