Free spruce trees offered recyclers "Trees are nature's fresh air machines," according to a McHenry County Defender spokesman, "since they clean carbon dioxide from the air, replacing it with the oxygen we need as they make their own food supply." Participants in the recycling drive, Saturday, April 21, will receive a free spruce tree in recognition of Illinois Recycling Week. The drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of McHenry Com munity High School West Campus, 4724 W. Crystal Lake Rd. Co-sponsoring the drive will be the Valley View School P.T.O.'s Cub Pack 142, under the Cub Mastership of Ray Jensen. The Cub Scouts hope to earn enough money to pay for their awards, badges, and usual outings, even as they help in a wor thwhile community activity, according to Pack Master Jensen. Readers are encouraged to bring any of the following items to the drive: glass containers with all plastic and metal removed, "tin" cans that are clean and flattened, aluminum scrap of all kinds, used motor oil, and newspapers that contain no magazines or junk mail in the mix. Brown paper bags and cardboard are also welcome. They must be tied into manageable bundles. A pay-back program is in effect for those who bring 100 percent aluminum cans; 33 cents per pound if crushed, 31 cents per pound if uncrushed. There is also a bonus of one cent per pound for lots of more than 100 pounds. For further information about preparing materials for recycling, just what items will be accepted or how your organization can become a co-sponsor, contact a Defender representative at 3854512.
